How does one set computer control?

When you're on the screen to pick a team to play against, press A to bring up that menu. The first option is something like "Play against User team", which is what you normally select when you want to play against someone. There are various other options in there and one of them sets your team up so that other guys can play against your AI for their games. I don't remember the exact wording of it, but its pretty clear when you see the options.
