I say the NHL forgets about this season with current players.. and plays a shortened season with retired players... say 45 and over... like the senior tour... Mario needs another scoring title... and lord knows most of those guys are probably in need of cash more than current players... the old 29er needs a paycheck
Obviously I am not being serious,,, but that would be sweet...
and players have to wear the equipment they wore when they played... Coffey has to play with that ridiculous contraption Steve Latin made for him when he broke his jaw..

This is the best thread I've seen regarding the labor dispute yet. I'm all for this. Gordie could still probably take most of these young kids and show'em a thing or two...they don't make'em like Gordie anymore...

mikey287 would be forced to finally accept Dino Ciccarelli's greatness.

not just alumni games where everyone dicks around... but serious games... people get to see their childhood heros competing at a high level one last time... old rivalries get stirred up.... hell, some 80s enforcers have to still be alive... take out the instigator... bring back some pissed off goalies with wooden sticks that they aren't afraid to use.... classic
once again, not going to happen obviously... but it would be sweet! let em compete for the cup one last time!

My All-Gordie Howe Hat Trick Team*:
T.Lindsay-S.Mikita-J.Iginla
C.Neely-B.Clarke-B.Shanahan
K.Tkachuk-E.Lindros-P.Verbeek
K.Stevens-S.Corson-C.Perry
Ex. R.Tocchet, B.Sutter
C.Chelios-Z.Chara
S.Stevens-R.Blake
M.McSorley-D.Phaneuf
Ex. G.Suter
Uhh...
R.Hextall
B.Smith
Ex. Mike Smith - I think he scored a goal in juniors and got tossed for fighting in the same game...not sure if it was him, but I think it was...
* - Not necessarily the most GHHT ever, just players that I know had a fair few of them. Gordie Howe only has two as far as I can tell and all those forwards have more. I don't know of many defensive GHHT's, Chara I'm quite sure has a few, Phaneuf one I think, I'm assuming Stevens did before 1995 (only d-man ever with a 20 goal/20 assists/200 PIM season), just kind of assuming Chelios had to come across one or two in his time...whatever...
In any event, that team would really make you re-consider playing hockey ever again if you had to face them...

I have Pronger at 0 career Gordie Howe Hat Tricks...so his inclusion would be highly suspect.

I'm sure the retired players would love to turn their back on the players association.

I'd pay to see this before replacement players. I'd love to see guys like Gretzkey, Lemieux(both of them), Messier, Shanahan, Tocchet, ect. back on the ice for another go around.

mikey287, what are the rankings of your Howe team in terms of Gordie Howe Hat Tricks?
You gotta know there are retired players out there still burning with desire to lace them up one more time.

I'm not positive of your question, you mean like how many GHHT's do they have each?

Still a work in progress. We're not quite sure. Conventional wisdom suggests Shanahan's 17 leads the way, but some sources give former Lady Byng winner Stan Mikita 21 or 22, Terrible Ted Linday 19, etc.. It's recently been determined that Rick Tocchet had 18 and Brian Sutter had 17.
Older game logs are not as easy to decipher because the "fighting" designation was not always assigned to the major. So sometimes you have to guess or do further research to determine if the player received a fighting major or a major of a different variety.
Mikita didn't get into that many fights (well, period) later in his career because he changed his game from pest to offensive dynamo...but if most of his fighting games also saw him get to a goal and assist like some suggest, then he's got it as far as I know. Determining them from 1987 and on is rather simple. The rest require a bit more investigation and it can be quite time consuming.
