This was a bet made on the Alabama set of "Close Encounters" in 1977, and is exclusively between Lucas and Spielberg. In other words, unless Lucas wants to be a jerk, he will still pay Spielberg 2.5% of anything he gets from "Star Wars" going forward. (I find it hard to believe that Lucas is giving up his profit participation as part of the deal; otherwise the $4 billion purchase [in cash and DIS stock] simply doesn't add up.)

I've seen some say it's a bogus story, but it's been part of Hollywood lore for decades. And it frankly sounds like something both would do. They are great friends and still follow their tradition of going to Hawai'i after one or the other (or both) finishes a movie on a joint vacation.

In fact, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was born from the first of these trips, the weekend Episode IV opened in 1977. Spielberg said he wanted to make a James Bond film, Lucas said he had an idea for an adventuring archaeologist named Indiana Smith. Spielberg said that name didn't work, offered up Jones instead, and the two went off to build sandcastles and talk about the story and how the character could be serialized. (fwiw, I've also heard stories that the 2.5% bet was placed in Hawai'i, not on the set of "Close Encounters")

Outside of Joss Whedon (who needs to spend his time making Avenger films), I wouldn't go for anyone on that list. My first thought was one of the Pixar guys like Andrew Stanton or Brad Bird and my cousin immediately said Kevin Smith or Bryan Singer.

Still haven't seen Episode 1. Don't care to. I'm interested in the idea of an Episode VII though. Or a new Star Wars movie. If its set in the old republic, it wouldn't make sense to call it Episode VII.

Someone at Lucasfilm is saying the drafts that have been written have nothing to do with the Thrawn novels, which are the logical chapters 7 8 and 9.

those deal with Luke restarting the Jedi Order, Han and Leias kids, and a guy named Thrawn trying to restart his own version of the empire.

I'd be on board for Stanton or Bird, what about Fincher, didn't disney just put his 20,000 leagues under the sea on hold? please no Joss Whedon. As awesome as this news is, is 2 years enough time to get a proper Star Wars movie and then 2 more every other year? I like the idea of treating star wars movies like james bond, but I'd rather have quality over quantity.

based on brothers bloom and the hype around Looper, I'd throw out Rian Johnsons name as well.

Kevin Smith has said many times he doesn't want to direct anymore. You can actually hear his weekly thoughts about really anything on his smodcast podcasts.

A few things I looked up:

Disney bought Pixar (the sole rights to their characters and animation technologies) for $7.4 billion

Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion

The Muppets cost $75 million

The idea that Pixar could be worth twice as much as Star Wars and ILM alone is mind boggling, without throwing in the rest of the stuff Disney gets.
