a few years back google quietly acquired a tiny company called Sage TV. they made dvr software and amazing hardware streaming units.

this has to be the reason they wanted them. a major blow to htpc and homebrew dvr, but a great software/hardware development team.

Google has it right in this space. Simple terms, huge bandwidths, complete focus on driving the content to all devices.

i see apple pairing with specific cable providers one at a time to deliver a new kind of hybrid internet/television service.

they probably plan on sending tv channels over that 700mbps connection.

if they do that, it will operate like switched digital video, a technology used in many markets by Time Warner and Cox among others.

a normal cable box user wouldn't know if switched digital video was going on, but somebody using a cable card device like a tivo will.

in traditional cable set ups, they send every channel through the pipe at once.

but for providers who are trying to add lots of channels/HD and are running out of bandwidth, they may choose to only send the most popular channels though. if you want to watch a less popular one, say EWTN, you have to "call home" and ask them to flip it on for you.

this system will probably work more like that. it would allow over 30 channels to come through at once (that would be a heck of a DVR recording all that) and still allow a large amount of internet/web bandwidth.

well, they are already offering the tv service as well as internet so yeah they have a tv plan.

i just hope and pray for the day i don't have to get armstrong cable for internet. the cable system for tv or internet is so infuriating in this country.

Holy balls...... we just moved and the AT&T U-Verse guy got us set up about an hour ago. Just ran a speed test that came back at 9.something mb/s and thought "Not bad...."

This is what I think is often referred to as a 'game changer'.

Yeah, my last speedtest was something like 17 MBPS down, 5 MBPS up, and I've never had issues with the speed of my service (FIOS). That is ungodly fast.

Your bandwidth is throttled by the web server you're hitting. There's no practical advantage to this speed for typical Internet use.

Will not happen. Apple will not invest their cash reserves in new technology... this is the opposite of what Google does, actually. Apple's valuation is heavily rooted in financial success (balance sheet, cash flow, recievables turnover, etc.) but their earnings are remarkably consistent also. Google, on the other hand, recognizes that they can boost stock price with big, smart gambles that disrupt the marketplace at large, and when they hit homeruns, which I really think Fiber is, it pays off, spurs new investments, adds the wealth of the company, and delivers results to shareholders.
