For example, Wichita, KS had its own automobile manufacturer:

http://wichitahistory.org/our_building/feature-exhibits/

“The 1916 Jones VI Automobile” exhibit – Of the thousands built, this is the only example of the Wichita built automobile on public exhibit. Catch a glimpse of Wichita’s early manufacturing industry and entrepreneurial spirit. This recreated garage setting features a 1916 Jones Six automobile that was built by Wichitian John Jones. Jones was a Ford dealer who thought he could build a better car than Henry Ford. He had a pretty good run producing an estimated 3000 cars and trucks right here in Wichita.

It's not really clear what happened to John Jones' company, but I guess he got drubbed by the ruthless larger corporations. ... Or maybe his car was just crap.

More of a mature market and larger barriers to entry now. If something new comes, like tech companies, there's a huge amount of start ups.. Although I guess they usually end up getting bought anyway.

I'd punch someone right in the throat if they tried to convince me to do that.

Most of those are too lame to even mention. For instance, smoking smarties isn't dangerous, but it mimicks cigarettes. Oh the humanity!! Things were much safer when I was a kid and you could just go buy candy cigarettes anywhere - oh wait

Google Earth Pool Crashing Kids are using Google Earth to locate homes with swimming pools in their neighborhoods. Then they send texts or Facebook invites to all their friends and stage impromptu pool parties. This phenomenon is most popular in the UK, where one bewildered pool owner woke up to find beer cans littering his yard.
