Avett Bros did 'I and Love and You' with Brooklyn Philharmonic a few wks ago on Kimmel. Kimmel was filming in Brooklyn all week, and for those not farmiliar with the song, it has a tagline regarding Brooklyn.

A great performance.

I saw that Avetts performance the other day. Let me ramble a bit about other North Carolina indie bands...

I mentioned on the last page about DeYarmond Edison. They were the band Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame led before he split from the band and moved home to Wisconsin, where he famously recorded For Emma, Forever Ago while holed up with mono. They had a much more straightforward alt-country sound, so people that have trouble getting behind the pretentiousness of Bon Iver might enjoy it more.

The remaining members of DeYarmond Edison formed Megafaun, which i've frequently heard referred to as "freak-folk"...

One of the members of the group has a side project known as "Phil Cook and His Feat", that strays a bit outside the folk genre.

Not related (other than being from NC), but I saw The Love Language last night as well. They're signed to Merge Records, which should tell you enough...

If you are fan of the "The Weeknd", his 3 albums are on sale for only 10 dollars on iTunes right now. Great R&B/Soul artist. Very talented.

Saw Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience last night at Carnegie Music Hall Homestead (a cool little venue). Went in expecting to be underwhelmed, but it was very good. They had a lot of visuals and I couldn't believe how well they sounded almost exactly like the recorded versions of the songs from the original Led Zep. Their singer had all the vocal range and was almost a dead ringer for Plant. Their lead guitarist, who also kind of looked like Page, was top notch. Jason Bonham, the son of the original Bonzo Bonham, plays drums, looking like Rick from Pawn Stars, but is a pretty badass drummer in his own right. They did Moby Dick, and he played his dad's drum solo, with video and audio of the original Bonzo playing the solo in the background. Pretty cool.

Lots of youtubes out there, but this one is probably the best

I really dug When the Levee Breaks, but my favorite of the night was probably Since I've Been Loving You, here is a crappy phone camera video

I saw Jason at greensburgs palace theater. Also got to meet Mark Madden. The show was good and the singer is a dead ringer for Plant. Visually wise with the big screen it also was cool.

Cool story about a rare Robert Johnson record turning up at Jerry's Records in Sq Hill (an awesome place). Good for them.

I caught this earlier this morning and it was pretty good....

Daniel Levitin on Music and the Brain

Daniel Levitin is a neuroscientist with a twist; he's also a musician and record producer. He says brain imaging is showing how our brains listen to and make music.

Oh, and what's with this crap.

"Another collaboration was the night's most colorful performance: Korean rapper PSY and MC Hammer. Hammer joined the buzzed-about pop star for his viral hit "Gangnam Style." PSY rocked traditional "Hammer" pants as they danced to his jam and to Hammer's "Too Legit to Quit.""

I am almost afraid to look at it on youtube. The 1-hit Korean person will be back in Korea in 2 months and we'll never hear from him again. But for now he's singing or dancing or whatever it is he does with Mc Hammer and also Madonna a week ago. Somebody's making money off him.

Sufjan Stevens somehow manages to incorporate Love Will Tear Us Apart into a christmas song (starts at about 7:30):

Enjoyed seeing Zac Brown last night in NJ, but the opening acts were also very good.

If you like country or southern rock check out Levi Lowery and Blackberry Smoke. Two good acts.

I don't listen to enough to do best of. All I can do is list some 2012 albums I've enjoyed, which basically amounts to me just looking down through my spotify and finding albums I've listened to in their entirety that I've liked, skipping ones that I've just listened to one or two songs from.

Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls
Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits
Caravan Palace - Panic
Brandi Carlile - Beer Creek
The Lumineers - The Lumineers
The Shins - Port of Morrow
Grizzly Bear - Shields
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Shearwater - Animal Joy
The Helio Sequence - Negotiations
The Mynabirds - GENERALS

During this exercise, I also realized how many albums I want to get through that I haven't yet.

How do you guys go about preparing your lists? Like, do you sort of keep a running tab as you run across stuff?

The idea of ranking seems quite daunting with such a large body of stuff.
