Kraftster, where's the metal on your list? Don't you have a need for a bit of technical mastery or at least some good ass kicking?

Couple of good choices for 2012.

Let's pretend 2011 is 2012. This likely makes the list.

Click if you like metal. Real metal. Not the fake stuff that is pretty abundant today. :P

I don't necessarily hate metal, I just can't find a place for it. Like Listening to a couple songs I can say, yeah, that's cool. But there's never a time where I'm like, "man, I need some metal right now." I generally try to stay pretty balanced and if there are emotions that I indulge in heavily they would probably be wonder and feeling, not aggression, which I feel like is the emotion that metal most suits.

I'd be pretty lost without being able sort the album by year on iTunes.

Listen to this piano track on the Fleshgod album. Well, there is sadness to it. That's probably why the name. It's beautiful. :thumb:

I'll make a 2012 playlist by just going up and down my ipod picking the songs i liked the most from the year. I'll make a tentative album list from that, then i'll probably go to pitchfork and see if I missed anything from the best new music.

I don't listen to enough to do best of. All I can do is list some 2012 albums I've enjoyed, which basically amounts to me just looking down through my spotify and finding albums I've listened to in their entirety that I've liked, skipping ones that I've just listened to one or two songs from.

Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls
Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits
Caravan Palace - Panic
Brandi Carlile - Beer Creek
The Lumineers - The Lumineers
The Shins - Port of Morrow
Grizzly Bear - Shields
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Shearwater - Animal Joy
The Helio Sequence - Negotiations
The Mynabirds - GENERALS

During this exercise, I also realized how many albums I want to get through that I haven't yet.

I forgot Hot Chip, John Fullbright, and Menomena.

Hmm. I can see that. I found "How Do You Do?" to be super catchy and gave it enough of a chance to like most of the rest of it.

Ok, here goes. Instead of a Top 20 of songs I included my favorite songs from the respective albums plus a few more from albums that didn't quite make the cut. Guess I don't listen to much "real" "rock" these days. Sorry for being a little excessive.

1. Jessie Ware - Devotion (Wildest Moments, Running, Sweet Talk, Night Light, Taking In Water)
2. Saint Etienne - Words & Music (Over The Border, I've Got Your Music, Last Days of Disco)
3. The Sea & Cake - Runner (On And On, Invitations, New Patterns)
4. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (Lost, Monks, Sweet Life, Pyramids, Crack Rock)
5. Beach House - Bloom (Wild, The Hours, New Year)
6. Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel (Anything We Want, Left Alone, Periphery)
7. Dexys - One Day I'm Going To Soar (I'm Always Going to Love You, Incapable of Love, She's Got a Wiggle)
8. Grizzly Bear - Shields (Yet Again, Speak In Rounds, Sun In Your Eyes)
9. The xx - Coexist (Swept Away, Tides, Sunset)
10. Bob Dylan - Tempest (Duquesne Whistle, Pay In Blood, Long And Wasted Years)

Songs:

Beak> - Yatton
Boldy James - The Last Two Days
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See A Darkness (new version)
Cat Power - Ruin, Manhattan
Dinosaur Jr - Don't Pretend You Didn't Know
Iamsu! - All I Rep
John Cale - December Rains, Living With You
Kardone - Light The Torch
Lambchop - Gone Tomorrow
MNDR - Sparrow Voices, Fall In Love With The Enemy
Nas - Loco-Motive, Daughters, Reach Out (just started listening to it, but it just might eventually make my Top 10)
Patti Smith - April Fool
Orbital (feat. Zola Jesus) - New France
Reina Republicana - Dime qué vas a hacer, Clonidina
Richard Hawley - Seek It
Rick Ross - Party Heart, Mine Games
Sharon van Etten - Serpents
Sufjan Stevens - Christmas Unicorn
Tamaryn - I'm Gone, Prizma
The Weeknd - Montreal

I probably wouldn't either if not for useful sites like Stereogum and Pitchfork.

Not only have I never heard any of the songs you listed, I've never even been to either of the sites you mentioned. Way to make a brother feel old. :)

I liked Only Heather, but otherwise I found it a little dull.

Also, I added that King Krule song to my tracks, that was just a single, if he made a full length of songs like "rock bottom" that would easily be my album of the year.

I was talking to my friend about him, he told me he saw King Krule in NYC with Girls and Real Estate. Lineups like that never come to Pittsburgh.
