I'm not deep in the scene, but I've always enjoyed Blondie, Weezer, Squeeze, the Jam, the Buzzcocks, Fountains of Wayne, XTC, the Smithereens, the Vapors..stuff like that. Stuff that qualifies as alternative but is hard to categorize into one genre, I think.
I remember seeing the Smithereens at Graffiti in Oakland after they got kicked off their label. Had to be almost 20 years ago. It was tremendous--everyone was into it. I don't even know if Graffiti still exists. /randomanecdotenotcoolstory
