Mario's new $20m mansion

Postby JS© on Sat Nov 24, 2012 4:08 pm

MONTREAL - Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux recently took possession of a new $20-million home in Mont Tremblant, Quebec's high end ski resort town.

The 1,500 square feet sprawling, Swiss castle-style mansion about 145 km north of Montreal has 23 rooms as well as 10 bathrooms.

The castle, which is made of stone and wood, is located on a piece of land close to Tremblant's golf course and ski hills. The castle also features a triple garage and a double garage, has an in-ground swimming pool and an outdoor tennis court with a heated floor.

Construction started in 2009 and according to QMI Agency sources, Lemieux often travelled to the construction site with his wife and four kids. The total cost of the home was reportedly $20-million.

1,500 square feet? $20 million? Either that is a typo or Mario overpaid for his mansion. ;)

And 23 rooms with 10 bathrooms. Typo for sure unless they are counting closets as rooms and corners as bathrooms!

It's a little big for a second home or a vacation home. Makes you wonder if Mario is planning to sell the Pens and move back to Quebec.

Not gonna say it's a non-issue, but this mansion has been in the works since 2009, or almost 4 years ago.

When 2 million can get you this place http://www.silohome.com/ (the ultimate bomb shelter/evil genius lair)

20 million on a house just seems incredibly frivolous.

I didn't notice pictures with that article. I saw this one earlier today and from what I see...the price tag is right and the square foot area in both articles states 15,000 not 1500. This one has pictures.

This is seriously old news. It was first reported in the Montreal media over 2 years ago. I was surprised no local media picked the story up at that time.

Yes but...the link with the pictures...while it's old news in that he's been doing this for quite a few years, the house was just finished. I read about it a long time ago too but this is the first time I've seen pictures and heard that the house is finally done.

That was more in repsonse to the local media acting like the house popped up overnight.

Ahhh...see....originally I'd not seen anything other than the article from the Montreal Journal. When I finally saw the local media all over it on twitter, I never even looked at what they said. But, I completely understand what you're saying. :)

Why would he have to sell the Pens to move? A guy that can afford a $20 Million vacation home can afford to fly between PGH and MTL a few times a year...

So your comparing this:

Think I'd choose the Swiss Castle over the missle silo...

Dubious timing for the rehash of this story - in the middle of a lockout pitting the owners vs. players. Paints, or attempts to paint, Mario as the extravagantly wealthy NHL owner. I don't buy it, but there's your spin on why this story is out now.

i always find it strange when highlighting mega mansions like this that "3 car garage" is one of the pointed out features. like, really? is that one of the garish spectacles? /random

The missle silo is unique and fun. I'd choose it over this garish monster.

The story is relevant, because the house was just FINISHED this month. The article linked above has the pictures showing the progress of the construction since 2010.

As far as the mansion itself - more power to him if he likes it. However, when I saw it, I immediately thought about a term Czechs use - "enterpreneurial (or business) baroque."
