Brown road Lemieux's coattails for an almost 50g campaign. In his 2nd stint with the Pens, he was more bottom 6 winger, and didn't do a bad job at filling that role. While Brown could use some better hair plugs, he was a talented player that had obvious chemistry with Lemieux during his first stint here. He also dated Alyssa Milano, so good for him on that.

Lang had 3 seasons of 20+ goals with the Pens as well as a season of 18g. He posted career highs in goals and points in 2000-2001. He was part of the KLS line with Kovalev and Straka.

Lang is a viable 2nd center for Lowell MacDonald.

Yeah, pretty much haha. Without Rob Brown, there is no Down Goes Brown, but that's outside of what happened when he was a Pen. I was too young to remember his first stint, but his second stint wasn't bad at all. He was able to adapt his game well. And who can forget this:

But he's right where he belongs, actually, check that, he's right where he has to be I believe. I agree that Lang is a good fit with Lowell MacDonald, MacDonald works well as kind of a glue guy for the far-from-industrious Lang...

I would just pick a team (either Original 6 or early Expansion era) and go from there. Its educational AND fun.

Could do it by decade I suppose, but then you start getting too talented a pool of players. I like having to delve into the depths of a team's history to find a solid 3rd line winger or perhaps an unsung hero type. Makes it more interesting than a team of all stars.

Other "project" - more of a game - considered was:

The NHL contracts down to the Original Six once more and every player becomes a free agent...then we hold a dispersal draft. Basically, six teams draft all current players. Follow-up could be a "minor league" draft, six "AHL" clubs select from the remaining crop. Was not intended to be a history project.

An all-time draft is one hell of a venture. I've been a part of them (well, actually, my first will be coming up in a couple months...but I've done the two drafts after that...meaning, say, 1000 players are picked in the All-Time Draft...I did the 800 after that and the ~300 or so after that). In my first go at it - against many veteran history studiers - I was voted to have had a top-2 team...much to my surprise. As I felt I was in way over my head. Still waiting the results of the next draft. Not wild about my team, but my God is it fast.

Anyway, enough about my noise, these things are tough. And for them to be done right (by "right", I mean, within any sort of reason) it's a near full-time job

If I do something like that, I really would want it to be done right...perhaps we could do a small one if there's some interest when the time comes. I'm worried about finishing this first and foremost. I'm glad that there's interest in this and history in general.

EDIT: Oh, you mean just doing another team? Yeah, that wouldn't be too terrible. I'm not sure I would do an O6 quite yet. Small steps. But whatever the group wants to do, I think I could handle and would devote some time towards.

Note: By decade doesn't really work. Arbitrary cut-offs confuse. Gerrymandering.

EDIT2: Other ideas to consider. Using draft classes (the best of the 1980's, for instance) and using expansion classes of teams (the best players from 1979: Quebec/Colorado, Hartford/Carolina, Edmonton, Winnipeg/Phoenix). Lots to consider.

Ok, I guess at this point you're not going to find a player without any "buts" attached to him. In this case, the but would be "but he's only played in 168 games for the Pens". So what.

A great skater with tremendous offensive skill, Nedved had 2 fantastic seasons with the Pens, including a legendary overtime goal in the playoffs against the Caps, before he decided to hold out for more money. Not cool, but he was eventually traded for Alexei Kovalev.

Petr Nedved played LW for the Pens, and that's where I want him, too: on Crosby's wing.

Yup, with such a shallow pool you quickly drive yourself nuts with "well, this guy didn't play defense...and this guy only scored with Mario and I don't have a Mario...and this guy didn't have hands...and this guy turned out not to be 'the answer'..."

This is where your team-building skills and planning come into effect. Protect weak players, put a player in a situation to succeed or find one that can.

I definitely wouldn't be against a the draft classes or expansion classes. Definitely would allow some creative freedom.

All time drafts would be overwhelming.

As would O6 now that I think about it.

But I think we have more interest than the 7 or 8 that applied for the roles.
