you would htink this organization would tread lightly with a slogan like embrace the suck. yes, its used in the military. but the military isnt assocated with a 20 year losing streak.

Sounds like Grilli is back, pending a physical.

I'd like to see us move Hanrahan if we can. No way this team can spend 7M on a closer.

Bringing Grilli back makes sense. Finding another bullpen arm shouldn't be that difficult this off-season. Really should be spending their money on another starting pitcher.

kenny the kangaroo's main concern is that GMNH's luck with finding guys off teh scrap heap (Javy Lopez, Poser, Grilli, etc al.) is going to run out and we are goign to be stuck with a bunch of brandon donnellys, takashashis and qualls types.

Nice to see Grilli take less money to re-sign with Pittsburgh (supposedly Toronto offered more)

I see no reason to trade Hanny now. He'd fetch more at the trade deadline, IMO.

Hanny
Grilli
Morris
Watson
Hughes
Wilson
Leroux

That would be one young bullpen. I'd expect them to pick up a veteran reliever before spring training.

I agree with Rocco, stocking up at SP is of much more concern right now. I don't want to be stuck with McPherson and Locke as your only #4-#5 options.

Grilli, Hughes, Watson, Morris, and Chesty Leroux are probably locks for 5/7 spots. Need to find one more late innings guy and probably a middle reliever. One could come from within like McPherson/Locke/J. Wilson

The Pirates have to sign one crappy reliever so Hurdle can inexplicably use him in high-leverage spots and then act bewildered when said crappy reliever blows the game. Who is out there that fits that description?

$5M a year? That's exactly why Karstens would've been a bargain at the ~$4M he would've got in arbitration...

Sad he didn't go to the Rockies. Supposedly they had an offer in for him and him pitching any number of games in Coors would've been hilarious.

lolol

http://www.twinkietown.com/2012/12/11/3753506/minnesota-twins-sign-kevin-correia-burn-piles-of-money-to-ground

It's confusing why the Twins would waste two years and ten million dollars on this guy, given that they have terrible starting pitchers that can't miss bats in abundance. Heck, they have to pay Nick Blackburn $3.5million next year anyway - why not bringing him back and let him get shellacked every fifth day, instead of spending an extra $5million to let Correia get whacked? Frankly, the whole thing makes no sense. If they were so desperate to set $10million on fire, why not bring back Esmerling Vasquez and have a nice warming bonfire?

We look forward to the morning, when we will likely find out that Correia is an "innings eater" who "throws strikes," two things that are true but that are also true of the BP pitchers in the Home Run Derby, whose agents will presumably be calling the Twins.

I'm not sure Hanny brings you more at the deadline. He'd only be a half season rental at that point, teams pay for control and will likely give more for 1 year vs. .5. The only guy who has potential for a decent return is GFJ, assuming NH can fool someone into believing last year can be repeated.

If you trade GJ you need to get a 1B in return. I'd gladly package GJ and Hanrahan to get said 1B.

I kind of agree but two things could work in the Pirates favor by waiting until the deadline.

First being no one is desperate for a closer or even a set-up guy (if someone wanted to use him as such) right now, sure some teams want one but they don't have a reason to overpay. At the deadline you may just find someone who is desperate, either by injury or someone underperforming, to acquire an arm and could possibly get just as much for him.

Second, while 1 year vs .5 years of control should get them more return in a trade it's also possible that he offers the most value by being a Pirate for half a season and then being traded. Basically half season of Hanrahan as the closer + the return in a deadline deal > return on a Hanrahan trade now..

Problem with waiting is he could blow his arm out or just suck and then they get nothing in a trade or production. Or they are right in the thick of things as they were the last two years and then they feel they can't trade him. I'd probably lean towards doing a deal now myself but if the return is only someone like Capuano then I don't think they'll get anything drastically less at the deadline and would probably be further ahead just hanging on.
