What does an ankle sprain feel like?

I have the same pain in my foot/ankle that I did about three years ago, only this time it's my left foot and not right. Both times I hurt it jogging in cooler weather.

The pain is soft tissue "bulge" on the outside of the foot, right below the ankle. Not at the ankle bone mind you, but on the soft fleshy part.

I am completely pain free if I put no pressure on the outside part of my left foot. If I take a few normal steps, it begins to hurt, moreso with each step. If I stop, roll my foot around at the ankle, and crack it (like cracking your knuckes) a few times the pain completely subsides for a for more steps.

This went away after a week or so before. I was even able to jog on an elliptical with it. It's just in such a weird part of the foot and the pain goes away by cracking it.

I'd say if it were sprained it would hurt with any pressure on it. You might have strained or twisted it.

If its pain in the cold weather it sounds like arthritis.

Is it tender to touch? I had some tendinitis in my ankle area a month or so ago due to some prior injuries and your description sounds somewhat similar to that pain.

I get gout in my big toe, ankle, and hip a lot. Cracking it feels amazing. Also, taking painkillers that my doctor prescribed works very well.

When I touch it I feel some discomfort I guess, but not outright pain. I know there are tendons there. Its like on the outside of my foot arch. I think I hurt it last night when I stepped up onto a curb, though it really didn't hurt at the time. Hard to find info on what it could be.

I'm off from work late next week. If it still hurts then I might have it looked at.

It would hurt with or without pressure if there was ligament/tendon damage. Can you move the foot freely through its full range of motion without standing on it?

Dr. Tif thinks it sounds more akin to skeletal misalignment, like when your back or neck goes wonky; go see a chiropractor.

Yep. Feels great when I do that. Allows me to walk for a bit pain free.

I don't know, it sounds like it could be tendinitis. Mine was strange. Swollen sometimes, not others, hurt to touch sometimes, not others. Stretching/strengthening worked the best for me. If you have rolled your ankle (to the outside) you can sometimes get a small bone chip that can float around in there. But if you don't remember a specific incident where you hurt it, I think it could be tendinitis, especially if you just started using it a lot more or something.
