I haven't seen Jackie Brown since it was in the theaters (!), so I'll have to revisit it to comment. I remember liking it at the time, but thinking it wasn't anywhere near Pulp Fiction. As for downward slope, I guess I meant the other movies he "presents" or produces.

you cant compare JB to PF...its just not fair. I liked Jackie Brown a lot.

Reading more "individual" (not professional critic) reviews of The Hobbit. Biggest takeaway is that not a single person likes the 48 fps. What a horrible decision by Jackson.

I think the original plan was to have it like that in every theater that could display it. the release was much scaled back - there are only two or three theaters in the pittsburgh area that are showing it that way. probably a decision the studio and distributor made together - forcing people who want to try it out to look for it instead of joe schmo stubbling into it and wondering if they're watching the movie being filmed live.

I actually think most theaters show "48fps" - they show 24 different ones but each one twice in a row. it helps blur the motion better.

I mean, I loved Cloverfield because it was a big stupid movie about a big stupid creature wrecking stuff up. Pacific Rim looks BIGGER, and maybe a little less stupid, but with MORE big stupid creatures, AND GIANT FREAKING ROBOTS FIGHTING THEM!

This is a fantastic article. In it you'll see why Will Smith seems to only appear in sci-fi alien films. It's because he and his agent figured out in a very formulamatic way that those movies make the most money so those are the ones he does.

True story: When Smith was trapped on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air set in the early '90s, dreaming of starring in movies instead of selling Alfonso Ribeiro's jokes, Smith and his manager, James Lassiter, studied a list of the top 10 grossing films ever. Here's what Smith told Time Magazine in 2007: "We looked at (the list) and said, O.K., what are the patterns? We realized that 10 out of 10 had special effects. Nine out of 10 had special effects with creatures. Eight out of 10 had special effects with creatures and a love story."14

I really feel like it's because making movies isn't expensive anymore. Many many movies are using little known actors with great results (for example Michael Fassbender was relatively unknown before Inglourious Basterds) everyone seems to be going young, unkown, hip if you will. The big budget "Ocean's Eleven" type deals don't work as well anymore. Heck even "The Avengers" only worked because it had years of build up and great storytelling. All the main actors in that movie (save Samuel L.) were relatively small time/unknown until landing their Avenger roles. Then with the build up of the individual movies with the overarching Avengers flick it all came together in a huge blockbuster. I digress but the main idea I think is that Hollywood is no longer looking to make the next super high paid movie star. They are looking to keep their costs down while creating a movie that will make them A TON of money.
