I didn't read any of the spoiler conversations when the movie first came out...

This movie was very disappointing. High expectations going in, started off very strong. But, to paraphrase "Hang 'Em High" by Van Halen, somewhere the movie lost it in a turn, and trouble seems to fit it like a glove. Great concepts laid out early, but it just turned into B-grade drivel. Really hack plot twists and amateur use of dialog. Please, the "captain" basically revealing the WMD angle in a throw-away line? Awful. Serious waste of potential in the Theron and Pearce characters. Killing off a main character early on? You're taught not to do that in 2nd grade, for a reason. Loved the effects, though.

The movie lost its turn when Damon Lindelof was hired to rewrite the original screenplay. He basically removed all aspects of the story that (logically) tied it into the Alien franchise and turned the movie into a jumbled mess. LV-426. Alien eggs instead of black goo. Facehugger/chestburster instead of the stupid squid thing. Derelict. 15 foot tall engineers. Could have been awesome, but it wasn't

Seek out Jon Spaihts' screenplay online. It's called "Alien: Engineers" and is an order of magnitude better than what Lindelhof 'fixed'. Still needs work, mind you...... but it's the 'green light' draft that Fox read and said "Yes! Let's make this into a movie!" Even in draft form it's so much better than "Prometheus" it's almost enough to make me hit myself in the face with a fry pan. I'd say Spaihts' "Engineers" draft is probably about 90% there.

There are some individual elements of the final film that are better, in my opinion. For example, I really like the idea that "Prometheus" is its own story and that a sequel to this film would not be "Alien"; the original was a self-contained bubble, and isn't really congruous with the larger themes explored by the questions raised in "Engineers"/"Prometheus". But even where improvements in concept were delivered, the final iteration and execution was so poor as to be insulting.

I definitely enjoyed it. It's not a "hilarious" movie, but - for the lack of a better word - a "smart" comedy for adult people (I'm 40+ myself, so some of the situations really hit the spot for me). I think it compares favorably with the "mature" Apatow's movies I liked (Knocked Up, Funny People), and it's considerably better than the 2 recent comedies starring Paul Rudd I had the misfortune to watch (Dinner for Schmucks, Wanderlust). That being said, there were at least 20, if not 30 minutes that could have been cut to make the movie better.

Last - don't rush out of the movie theater when the credits start rolling - IMO the best scene in the movie (improv outtake) happens about 20 seconds after the movie ends.
