Well, not that I necessarily subscribe to this rumor, much less this actually taking place...but I don't think we're at the 50-contract max. I think we're at 48 unless Morrow, Pouliot, Maatta or Harrington make the team this year. Those contracts all slide.
EDIT: I'm clueless Joe Jackson. Morrow is obviously in the AHL already, so his counts. The other 3 slide, we're at 49.

I think Morrow's contract would count because he is playing in WBS. The others are in juniors and don't count against the 50 number unless I am missing something.

You certainly can't rely on Sarge for 25 minutes anymore, I don't think anyone would dispute that. But 10 minutes and QBing the PP has me more than a little intrigued.
I think it would reflect more on their feelings towards Tanger running the PP.
Sure, that too.
I don't know I'm very confident in his ability to do that.

Tanger's great at bringing the puck up ice, but as a quarterback he's been pretty meh. Our best option for QB is probably Crosby. But QB isn't the best option for Crosby.

Contingent on what they would be giving up, I wouldn't hate this move. As long as Gonch is on the 3rd pairing and no PK, it could work

As little as they use 4th lines in the playoffs, would be worth dressing 7 Dman just to have him run the PP.
Last time Pens played the majority of the playoffs with 7 dmen, the end result was pretty good.

Gonchar is not going to fix this team's problems...
The PP this year was better (percentage wise) than it was the last year Gonchar was here. Would Gonch have made a difference in the playoff blowouts? Most likely not.
I don't see why we would need to waste the cap space, TBH. It's not worth $5.5 mil (even in a shortened season) to play 10 minutes or less a night.

If he retires and the Pens bring him in to coach the "D" men then maybe I can see bringing him back. Otherwise, as much as I like Sarge, at his age he becomes a liability on the ice. Definitely don't want to see him take up 5.5 mil of cap space.

I don't see cap space being an issue. 5.5 is a lot, but his contract is finished at the end of the year. And it's even less if you get him at he deadline. Just depends on his level of effectiveness and what would be given up for him IMO

Giving up ANY assets for Gonchar would be a bad idea.

Eh, a 4th - 7th rd pick wouldn't be the end of the world. I'd rather see the young guys get a chance first, but it would be tough in a shortened season to ease guys in.

Some Sens fans would be ok if it was Gonchar for Despres...(lol) - others would be content with one of our carbon blobs from the "depth d-man pile" and a mid-round pick. Like Bortuzzo and a 4th, for instance. Luckily, I don't think this is going to happen regardless...

Last time they gave up a pick to bring in a defenseman in the offseason, they ended up getting Paul Martin.

Gonch can still play and played well against the Rangers in the playoffs last year.
I'm all for it...
Don't get wrapped up in the 50 player contract max. Shero will work out a trade if he wants Gonch. Not a big deal...

Gonchar played some of the worst defense I've seen in my life last year throughout the year. He wasn't just bad, he was downright awful.
He's a liability at this point in his career.

Gonchar coming back wouldn't just be about his production on the ice. The team needs veteran leadership, as we saw from that Philly playoff display last year.
In addition, he played over 22 minutes a game for a playoff team. He obviously can still play. Just limit his exposure and put him as a bottom pairing player on even strength.

Since we have no idea what will happen this year with the cap, or even with the season, how can any team think of signing anyone right now? But if the season started in 2 weeks, and if I had any say in this, it would be a BIG no thank you.

He played very well last year. Was on the top PP with Karlsson, killed penalties, played in 74 games, and was as effective as ever with a big scoring defenseman. A little further, it takes the pressure off of some of the guys that need veteran leadership.
There's no telling what the cap hit could be, but even at $5.5mil its reasonable; what would be unacceptable is if we sent a key prospect the other way. No reason to send talent to Ottawa AND relieve their cap issues...

Pump the brakes on the Gonchar rumors. Comes from same guy that had 71 off to LA. Pens also at 50 contract max, so trades have to be even. Pens also have 6 D on 1way deals, plus 2 more that would have to clear waivers, PLUS Despres
He's gonna play for a 'hometown discount'
