Maybe it is because of the fact that we've been given false hopes all season long, but I truly do not feel optimistic about the deal getting done by the 11th.

Actually it's a smart move, knock on wood, if there is no season the khl has limits on NHL players a team can sign. Sign now start he some conditioning and games and if there is a season you are ready

I agree it is a smart move by Letang, but I also agree with the OP, I see nothing good\positive about it in relation to an agreement.

Letang hasn't been involved in anything negotiation-related. I find it hard to believe he knows something about how they're going.

If he truly knew something, why aren't other players doing the same thing?

I would bet on this having nothing to do with the current bargaining climate.

Yeah, if they play, he'll be in shape. If not, he has a team this year. Smart move.

Yes but you also have to take into account that Letang's gf was pregant, i believe she was pretty far along at Armstrong's wedding over the summer based on the pictures. Since there is no contact between organization and players, letang's gf most likely had their baby and since there is no contact, there is nothing on the pens website or new release about it.
If you where a new dad, would you really want to leave quickly after the birth if you didn't have too?

He did a 'meet the media' type of thing yesterday and confirmed it. He'd always said he planned on going overseas to play. In fact, he said the only team he planned on signing with was SKA, but he was waiting for the birth of his son. Alexandre was born the day after US Thanksgiving so in that respect the timing seems fair. He also said that by going now, if the season was canceled, he'd not have to worry about fighting for a team with every other displaced NHL'er.

There was a press conference at the SKA and when asked why he is coming now he said it was because they had a baby. The baby was born on November 23. There have been videos of Letang on HNIC showing him keeping in shape during the lockout. He workouts are very intense and he works out twice a day. I also read that he was going to leave for Russia a few days earlier, and his teammates called and told to hold off because a deal looked like it was coming, then when it all went off the rails, he jumped on the next plane. I think he is looking to just get a few games in to get in game shape, then if a deal doesn't get done, he still has a place to play.

Does he still get the signing bonus? If so, genius.

Letang signs with KHL team, flies to Russia, changes planes and flies back. Good season, Kris.

Not a dumb move by Letang. In case the lockout went further, he had to make an appearance over there or the KHL was going to move on, so to speak. He ends up just flying around the world basically for no reason, but it had a purpose at the time. This was several weeks in the making.
