Cool news from CES

Postby pittsoccer33 on Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:34 pm

I figured I'd post some of the news items from the Consumer Electronics Show that have caught my eye. Feel free to add some to the list:

Star Wars bluray coming in September: http://www.pcworld.com/article/215921/d ... luray.html

Vizio debuts 21x9 extra widescreen television: http://gizmodo.com/5440598/vizio-xvt-pr ... ma-wide-tv

Gateway Computers shows off prototype Gateway Media Console running Windows Media Center embedded. It is a Tivo like box that can record six programs at once and distribute them around the house, as well as storing ripped music movies and pictures: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/gate ... ed-standa/

ATT will launch an LTE network this summer: http://wirelessweek.com/News/2011/01/AT ... er-Summit/

I don't think those TVs would fit in my home.

This year a few of the trends are:

-4K televisions. Everyone is showing off 70"+ 4K televisions. 1080p x 4 = 4K. Sony is promising to actually distribute something in 4K to watch.

-Google TV boxes and tv sets with the operating system built in. A number of new ones. Maybe this year Google will start to take their own platform seriously

-Dish is debuting a new Hopper DVR (that thing with the annoying tv commercials) that has a Slingbox built into it. The Hopper/Joey set up is actually awesome. If I were interested in satellite this would be my first choice. If you have an ipad you can sync it to take recordings offline, for a plane trip or car ride with limited high speed connections.

-5G. Urgh

-Samsung's new bezel/base stand. Image

-more electronics in vehicles. GM wants you to develop apps for their cars. Angry Birds on the Parkway?

-quad core processors in tvs

-more point and shoot cameras with interchangeable lenses and wifi connections.

-AMD is showing off more advanced x86 (processors for Windows based computers) with the graphics and other parts of the system on the chip itself. These will find themselves in lots of Windows 8 tablets and Ultrabook style laptops. Intel is showing off Bay Trail, the newest Atom processor for tablets and HTPCs.

-wireless speakers - a new standard has been developed and have been shown off at a number of AV industry trade shows recently. Also lots of bluetooth and cloud connected portable speakers.

-wifi based home automation. if Kickstarter would have existed a few years ago this is a place I knew was going to take off. Now big companies like Belkin are getting it on it. Wifi enabled light switches, dimmers, sump pumps, ovens, etc.

yeah, you look everywhere but the screen. if the point is to hide the base/stand, this is the completely wrong way to go about being sleek/modern. its like a giant digital picture frame.

Figured something was up with Mindstorms since the NXT 2 keeps going in and out of stock at Amazon. My oldest son wanted to get one but I've talked him into waiting now. Snakebot for mod!

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/14/38746 ... hopper-win

On Friday, news broke that CNET had been forced by its parent company CBS to remove the Dish Network's Hopper set-top box from its "Best of CES" awards due to ongoing litigation between the two companies. CBS has been battling the Dish Network in court over the Hopper's ability to skip past commercials automatically (NBC, ABC, and Fox are also taking action).

Basically, the head of CBS Leslie Moonves found out and flipped.

The Hopper is essentially nothing more than a DVR with more tuners and a larger hard drive. The auto commercial skip function, however, has the networks terrified.

David Katzmaier is CNET's hdtv guru and I've always held a pretty high opinion of his reviews. This story completely destroys the idea of any editorial independence on the part of these guys. Everyone knows that to a certain extent advertisers get more favorable reviews, whether its Car and Driver, Guitar World, or Good Housekeeping. But this is pretty brazen.
