You considered Tampa a "disappointment"?

Also, Montreal series was in the 2nd round.

Geez, if only every NHL coach got fired for making the playoffs

I just don't see how making the playoffs (especially if they advance a round or have their 3rd line center playing on the 1st line) is a disappointment.

Tangradi doesn't have enough speed for the unemployment line. People need to seriously stop bringing up his name.

I think it's short sighted not to characterize the Montreal and Philadelphia series as extreme disappointments, particularly in that they lost through coaching. In the Montreal series, we were heavily favored an expected to roll through the team. Last year, we were heavy (by NHL standards) to win the Cup and we were utterly embarrassed in the first round. Finally, although the talent was absent in the TB series, we had a 3-1 lead.

If an NHL coach couldn't make the playoffs with our roster they would fired outright. That said, there's an expectation that we will go deep in the playoffs on a semi-regular basis. A three year slump on that front is inexcusable, period.

When are people going to learn that "heavy favorites" =/= automatic Stanley Cup win?

I preach this as much as anyone. But the better question is when are going to see:

(Favorite + Getting Embarrassed in First or Second Round) * 3 = "Disappointment"

the montreal series and the way the philly series played out were inexcusable disappointments. there's no other way to look at it, really.

in the tampa series, i actually think they overachieved. no hard feelings on that one.

There's 4 rounds in any given playoff. I wouldn't say losing in 7 in the 2nd round is getting "embarrassed". I also wouldn't say losing the Tampa series was getting "embarrassed" either. There's 16 teams in every playoff. 15 teams have to lose in order to crown a champion.

Maybe that's where we differ. It's hockey. When it gets to the playoffs, any team is as likely to win as the next. That's why they play the games. You're expectations are way too high, and YOU get disappointed when it doesn't go your way, and when it doesn't, it's an "embarrassment" because the team didn't live up to your insanely high expectations.

If the Pens take the same approach as they did in the playoffs the Pens won't even make the playoffs this season.

Nobody but I'm saying when they get beat by Philly, really nobody from the team had any answers and seemed to say things fall apart and it was "bad luck" I sure hope they haven't and won't keep that mindset going into this season.

8-)
from regular season games to play-off games; didn't see a change in the approach to playing the flyers.
we'll see if that has changed- other than just hoping pens talent has a great day.

Bylsma, on Paul Martin's value: “Paul is a good hockey player. You just ask around the league. You just ask the players he plays against."

Brooks Orpik, discussing Paul Martin's 2011-12 performance: "I think he was just as disappointed as anybody else last year in how he played"

Bylsma says Paul Martin will remain in a top-4 role and, in tomorrow's P-G, identifies a surprising candidate to be his new defense partner.

I'm guessing Bortuzzo?

Or maybe it's Tanger.

Based on the many guesses that have come in so far, people really will be surprised by the identity of Martin's possible defense partner

Just say who it is, for f***s sake, what do you think the hell twitter is for???

But would Tanger really be a surprise? They've played together a lot.

I'm thinking maybe Bortuzzo.

For those guessing/asking, no, I won't divulge Martin's potential defense partner. Would kind of defeat the purpose of teasing the story.

It's the "surprising" part that had me think of someone from WBS. Bortuzzo is a stay at home and strong d-man. Beats me though.
