Need Help Buying Art...

Postby Senka on Sat Jan 12, 2013 2:49 pm

Anyone Know about art or buying artwork? My new apartment needs some and I've been looking. I found this deal on groupon and I didnt know if it was a good as it sounds or am I being blinded by "retail price" markdown... Thanks for any help. I want to get the golden gate work because of the color scheme.

Find a store that sells the furniture from builder model homes. They also have all the art and decorations for super cheap. That's where most of our stuff came from, and they usually have TONS of art.

this is excellent advice. also, consignment stores. alsooooo, go to the shadyside and/or three rivers art festival (if in pgh) and find some stuff there. especially go on the last day and try to get some good bargains as most of the time the artists may not want to transport some of the stuff around so good deals can be had. i have purchased a number of pieces this way

There are quite a few websites that have recreations of famous pieces. I don't know if that's what you are looking for

Heard good things about those 'starving artist' shows, but I haven't seen any of them advertised recently. Follow the spoiler for possible explanation...

Sorry, couldn't help myself... :pop:

I usually inherit stuff or frame sports memorabilia, but I did buy a few pieces from Nevin Robinson. His stuff is great; Pittsburgh scenes, different sizes, etc. I love it.

Damien Hirst would take much pleasure from this.

Those staving artist shows are terrible. When they say starving artists, they mean starving asian workers recreating the same pictures over and over again.

To answer your original question, YES, this looks like a decent deal. It's gallery wrapped canvas, which means the canvas wraps around the edge of the wooden frame so there is no need for a frame. You can frame them if you want, but that would be costly. The more modern look is to leave pieces like this unframed. $99 for 3 large pieces of a scene you choose is a nice deal.

Remember, though, this isn't "art" but a pressed on photographic print of the scene. You will not see brush strokes, but because of the pressing, you will see canvas texture.
