In mid run, I heard a "crack" and felt a pop, and a sudden rush of pain.

I was in a lot of pain when lifting my leg in a bending motion, to climb or go down stairs. There was some swelling in the back of the knee, and a bit of instability.

This morning the swelling is gone, pain is greatly reduced. But still having difficulty/instability going up and down the stairs. Walking with a bit of a limp, because I'm not putting full weight on the knee (left knee).

So, LGP "doctors", does it sound like an ACL? If the knee improves over the next few days, I'll let it go. But if it doesn't, I'll go to a doctor. But I want to at least have a general idea of what it might be going in.

Sounds identical to what happened to me: the pop, the bending the knee, and especially climbing stairs. Definitely get it looked at. I made the mistake of putting it off for almost a month and it ended up setting me back a few weeks in my recovery.

My guess says it sounds like a sprained knee.

Theoretically a sprain and tear are the same thing. Just different degrees :)

Not clear, but the swelling went down over one night? Seems a bit quick. Took mine a good week or so, then another week to release that when I jumped my knee was so weak that I'd just fall over when I landed.

I'd give it a few days, then go see a doctor.

Could it be a hamstring injury?

Hurts to bend, hurts going on stairs... hammy connects to the back of the knee...

Have someone give you the drawer test (google it) or you can do it yourself. Pretty easy way to see if anything isn't attached.

They'll give you pain pills and tell you to rest it. That's what they always do.

I don't take pain pills, other than motrin. It works fine. So I'll never get the script filled.

If I have to get a brace, I hope it isn't one of those honking big ones with the metal joints.

To stabilize the knee it will either be that or completely immobilized. The metal joints aren't too bad though.

This is what I do for a living.... The best test to determine it it was an ACL is a Lachman's test. Google it, someone will have to do it to you. You can also Google Varus and Valgus tests for the knee, if the Varus test is positive, it could be LCL.

Were you cutting, or running in a straight line when you felt the pop and crack? What knee was it? Where was the swelling, medial or lateral (inside or outside of you knee)?

If steps are the thing that produces pain, it could also be your meniscus.

Straight line. Left knee, swelling in the BACK of the knee. Knee feels "loose", if that makes sense.

Straight line. Left knee, swelling in the BACK of the knee. Knee feels "loose", if that makes sense.

It makes sense to me.

Was there any kind of "drop off" or change in grade where you were running?

Not going to lie, swelling in the back of the knee is usually bad news. It could also be your PCL, but that type of injury would be rare with your mechanism.
