Are there going to be several games like this - where you might have no way to watch them if you're not in the right area?

Still TBA on my cable guide.
I have the iMac -> HDMI cables ready, if necessary and they stream the Pens game.

If the NBC feature is Kings/Hawks any chance the Pens/Flyers would be available on the Center Ice free preview? Not sure how all that works.

why is this surprising? the Kings are raising the Cup banner. Also Chicago and LA are pretty gigantic markets (oh, dunno, 2nd and 3rd in the USA behind NYC?)...
Pens/Flyers is on the NBC site, streaming for free, fwiw. (Not sure if this works for me in Canada, but I doubt it, and I'm working anyways.)

Thank god for my HDMI out port on my Laptop.
Hooking it up to the bigscreen for Saturday.
St. Louis gets CHI/LA. At least NBC has the common courtesy to stream the game online.

Ummm... Not sure how this is the NHL's fault.
1. You live in the western are of the country.
2. The Kings should open the season anyway, they are the Stanley Cup Champs.
That being said, the game actually starts around 3:30, because NBC plans on showing the banner raising.

my local NBC station (Atlanta) is showing college basketball. they've moved the Pens and Flyers to an independent station. weird but at least we're getting it. as for the original poster, don't know who provides your tv service but Directv usually opens up an "alternate channel" with the other game when NBC runs multiple games.

Dumb scheduling, you make the Flyers/Pens a Noon ET start, and then have the Kings on at 3:30 PM ET.
In simple terms it's called a doubleheader.
What sense does it make to have arguably the best rivalry in hockey relegated to regional coverage?

Their contract may only allow 1 timeslot during the day, so it isn't that simple.
Most people out west probably rather watch the Kings. Only a handful of people are going to be upset to not be able to watch the Pens.
I don't see anything wrong with what they did. There are alternative methods to get the game if you need to.

You don't make the Flyers Pens start before the Kings because coverage of that needs to open the season.

I'm getting "Teams to be determined" on TV guide.com.
I'm assuming it's Kings-Hawks here in SC.

I completely disagree with you. I think the season should start with the Stanley Cup Champions on TV first. Just like the NFL does. The whole country should watch whomever won the cup, see the banner go up. That's why we cheer for our teams, that's why the players play.
It is the best rivalry in the NHL in the eyes of the Pens and Flyers fans. I'm sure Boston-Montreal fans feel thats the best, Chicago-Detroit...etc.

Hell, I think a lot of FLyers fans feel the Rangers are a bigger rival, and some around the country feel the Caps are a bigger rival to the Pens.

Yeah, most Flyers fans I know hate the Rangers more than the Pens, but Crosby more than anything.

We are like the third wheel in that Rangers and Flyers. We need a new rival like Buffalo.

Is that new? I'm pretty sure I used to watch the weekend matinee games on Center Ice when my NBC affiliate was showing a different game, even as recently as last season.

I think Center Ice is an agreement with the local broadcasters, so unless NBC was just playing a local feed or something, I don't think so. I feel like I remember the same thing though, so who knows haha.

More or less correct. The easy way to remember it is any games available through a local broadcaster/affiliate and any game that's fully national will be blacked out. It's actually not that bad once you figure out what is and isn't blacked out; for example, my blackouts are games that are on CBC Atlantic, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Sens, TSN, TSN2, and TSN-M.
