That's BS. When the Pens make a trade, you can trade junk for a star.
Kennedy and Martin can bring in anyone.
Yeah, but we'd be trading away our two best players... There's no return that would make that worth it

Welp, with both Mitchell and Greene being out for extended periods of time, it looks like the LA could use a defenseman. StraitLovejoy + Tangradi for Brown seems reasonable.

They do need a little bit of depth at wing, but not a big name guy. What they'll be looking for is another complimentary type of player like Dupuis, and at the deadline they will get one fairly cheap if he's in the last year of a contract. That way in the event of an injury at wing, they would have options. They should have signed Ray Whitney.

Yup -
2 years, $9-million that's a lot of money to commit to a 40-year-old - regardless of how great a player Whitney is.

Not for Brown or for any player really but if Shero wants to get the best retrun for Lovejoy now would be a good time to move him. Maybe a 3rd rounder?
But LA can just claim Vandermeer from the Nucks, he's a good depth guy and free.

He already cleared waivers, as did Anthony Stewart.

To acquire Dustin Brown, the conversation starts with Letang and includes either of the the 2 London Knights; Harrington or Maitta. Those are places I doubt Shero wants to go. I still think Iggy might be an option, as Calgary begins to die their slow inevitable death. Even then, Pouliot and possibly Dumoulin might be targets, along with say Kennedy and a pick.
Stewart might still be interesting from St. Louis; but a Brown or a Benn is a pipe dream.

Any trade we make for an already proven top-flight winger will most likely involve at least two of:
1. Letang
2. Neal
3. Despres
4. Dumoulin/Maata/Pouliot/Morrow/Harrington/Bennett
5. 1st/2nd round pick
Moving Neal doesn't make sense because it's a lateral move at best. If Letang prices himself out of the Penguins' budget, he won't be shopped around until next season most likely. If Despres looks serviceable this year and Shero wants a class winger (which I suspect is not the case), I think he is the most likely to be moved with the addition of one of our blue-chip prospects and a draft pick. Even that might not get you a guy like Brown. Moving down to the second echelon of wingers I can see a lot of teams being interested in Martin conditional on the fact that he keeps playing well. Other than that we really don't have much to offer other teams. Nobody wants a collection of our scraps (Tangradi,Kennedy,Lovejoy,etc.).
A lot of teams with decent young offensive depth already have a stockpile of defensive prospects, like the Oilers. A lot of fans point to the Neal trade and say "look what RS did there!" and don't realize that the trade market, especially for prospects, is not perfectly liquid. There may not be teams that want to give producing assets for a 2-4 year project. Shero could have been shopping Goligoski for two years until Dallas, a team with an expendable young winger came along with a need for a puck moving defenseman.
While I'm a little sad that the first 8 years of Crosby's career has been spent centering Andy Hilbert, Mark Recchi, and Pascal Dupuis, I'm confident that Ray has a tentative plan and won't overpay for the sake of adding a few more goals to our top 5 offense.

well for argument's sake, we traded goligoski at an artificial high point and that worked out pretty ok

But, for argument's sake, trading Martin now, with our current D-corps, is a really bad decision.

It would make my life if he were to pass through the Penguins for a cup of coffee on his way to retirement. To see him in a Pens sweater, even for a few months...

Trading Gogo made sense because the Pens had Martin and Letang blocking Gogo and neither of those two were going anywhere (Martin because of his contract, Letang because he's better). You could move Gogo without really opening up a hole. Trading Martin opens up a hole in the defense.

BONVIE wrote:Move Kunitz back to Malkin's line and let Sid have Dustin. He hits everything that moves and would give Sid some room to work which is sort of what Kunitz does now.
If Kunitz does that now, and produces similar offensive numbers, what is the point of acquiring Brown to replace him on Crosby's line?

It's weird. A few years ago Brown was considered in all kinds of rumors to be traded. I think people overvalue him by saying it's Letang or that caliber player. He had a fantastic play-off, but I think he could be had for less than Letang.
