I hope no one who's ripping on Boychuck is a Tangradite; Boychuck is a year younger. No harm in seeing if he can fit in with Geno.

When you ignore the draft, can't develop players, and top NHL skill prospect in WB/S behind Bennett is Megna... you've got major problems. For someone to put all their eggs into the basket of taking a young defensemen and trading him for a player who is likely finished with the ELC's is just real bad management. This is the same crap that I've railed on Craig Patrick ten years ago and it is repeating itself again.

Boychuk is a nothing talent for cheap, so give him a chance due to his speed but little irritating to see him getting a possible 2nd line opportunity with Megna and Bennett in WB/S.

Bylsma's handling of young players isn't any better.

I mean, sure, why not...he has some upside, he's not overly intelligent or consistent in his ability...he's kind of like a more talented, but less versatile Jeffrey for a rough comparison...you can't quite use him, but he probably belongs in the NHL, but you wouldn't be sad if he wasn't kind of deal...

I mean, whatever, we're desperate, this costs a few thousand dollars to make the claim + whatever you pay him, so it's an all cash deal, no big whoop...I hope he works out and becomes a 200-goal scorer here...otherwise, if we waive him again, Carolina will take him back and send him back to Charlotte for further development...

Bylsma says that Boychuk will bring grit to the lineup? If so, I'd like to take another pot shot at our pro scouting. Either we thought we got Johnny Boychuk or we have guys following the NHL that aren't facing the right way in the seats...someone had to tell him that he was gritty (as if we don't have grit)...he's not...

I think it's time to look at Shero's job as a gm. How many players did he draft that are playing on this team? His trading isn't great either.

So basically we traded a young fringe d-man, which we have a bunch of, for a young fringe winger.

If he's as good or better than Strait, I got no gripe.

I guess he's better for us than Strait...which is all that matters. We have a couple of players in the organization with Strait upside...we have fewer with Boychuk upside because of scouting limitations...or, wait, no, it's because we didn't draft Teravainen...or something like that...

So he's got a 2-4 week tryout until Niskanen comes back. The potential cost is in an opportunity cost for the development (ice time) of Jeffrey and Tangradi. Regardless, adding another young forward to the team is a plus. But if when Niskanen comes back it means exposing Tangradi or Jeffrey or Bortuzzo to waivers, then meh, it's likely not much of an improvement asset-wise for the organization.

However, if Boychuk earns a permanent spot on the roster which allows us to trade away a Kennedy or Kunitz plus a pick for an upgrade somewhere, then great.

No, not top-6. Where did you get this idea?

Organizational depth at forward is a good thing.

I was kinda excited to see this kid on Genos line, but with the way Jefferys played last night, keep him there.

No one is claiming this move is great. Heck, I'd be willing to be Shero looks at it as a longshot. That said, why not see what he can do on a two-week tryout while Niskanen is on IR. When Niskanen comes off IR, Boychuk either stays (forcing Tangradi out) or gets waived. This isn't a big deal.

Also, a few more things.

1. Shero's trade record has been rock solid. He landed Gill, Guerin, Hossa, Dupuis, Kunitz, Neal, Niskanen, and Vokoun through trades. His "busts" have been Ponikarovsky and Kovalev. The Staal trade is too early to grade.

2. There have been many legitimate NHL players (some stars, even) who have been placed on waivers, claimed, and placed in prominent roles. Marcus Naslund, Martin St. Louis (kind of...he was exposed in the expansion draft by Calgary, went undrafted, was bought out, then signed by Tampa Bay), Mark Recchi (exposed by Pens and went on to remain productive, even winning the Cup in Boston), Ilya Bryzgalov, Dick Tarnstrom, etc.

Heres an idea for RS, instead of picking up a forward off waivers every year, how about drafting one before the third round!
Food for thought.
Thanks

I agree about giving him a chance. How many players has Shero drafted that are playing? I think some of It's Bylsma fault, but I get worked up when they don't give the younger players a chance.

I couldn't give two shakes how the players get acquired... As long as we end up with a 'Cup contender.

This is a good pickup. Boychuk plays with an edge, even if he is a smaller player. He could end up being a Bob Errey type player even if he doesn't score a ton. Guys like that can be valuable, and with Cooke and Adams aging and several other wingers up for a new contract, this is a move that could pay off in many ways even if he doesn't work with Geno and Neal.
