Don't know if they use horsemeat in the US. As I understand it, most US burgers use soy as filler.

I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but I completely agree. My mom owns a couple of horses, and has been having an aneurysm over this story. Big deal. If you eat steaks, pork, and chicken, it's a tad hypocritical to get uptight over horse meat.

This was ongoing while I was there. In short the only people who gave a crap was the media.

In terms will I eat it or won't I, just about the only animals that I draw the line at are house pets. But if I was in a country where the consumption of dog and cat meat was socially acceptable, and someone put a plate of it under my nose, I don't know if I'd want to insult the culture and refuse the meal.

(Should also point out that in my first post, the illegality of horsemeat for human consumption was here in the U.S. It's a common food item in many countries the world over.)

This is a major, major problem. Instead of being sent to the slaughterhorse, many of them die slowly of starvation, disease, or whatever else. Which also irritates me when horse lovers endorse their closing.

While I wouldn't eat it (or dog or cat), I understand it is culturally acceptable to do so in the majority of the world. I think the people complaining about this wouldn't eat at a BK anyway...

Based on the extremely small amounts of horse content they are finding in most of the cases (like 0.1%), my guess would be that someone didn’t clean the industrial meat grinder between running a batch of horse meat and then running a batch of beef. That would also explain the similarly small amount of pig DNA they also found in some of the batches. I can certainly imagine some worker in a busy factory saying “Eh, that’s clean enough. Load up the next batch!”
