Anyone else hate driving on single lane roads?

Postby saveourpens on Sun Feb 03, 2013 12:25 am

I can't help but feel a bit antsy when I'm driving on these things and 16-wheelers are barreling down the road, right towards me...albeit with 10-15 or so feet separating us. Even worse at night when people are tailgating and driving with high beams.

I feel like I put my life into the hands of other dumb drivers when I drive on these roads. Anyone else?

I admit to getting nervous when a huge Penn Dot truck blows by me plow down on a snow covered road.

I only dislike highways with no shoulder and the only gap between the traffic heading the other direction is a concrete barrier.

It could've been a 14 wheeler.

This. People don't realize your life is always at the mercy of the worst driver on the road. At least on single-lane roads there are fewer people that might kill you.

Not just you, and it feels this way ALL the time in the UK. As an American I was used to wider roads and the roads are so narrow here at times it really freaks me out and it was probably one of the freakiest things to get used to. Not unusual to be squeezing by on a little main street road and some car passes you with what feels like a whisker's width separating us. UGH...!!!!

It was the same driving in Ireland. Now those are narrow roads.

I can't stand driving on freeways; they're just so uninteresting, and here in L.A. they're usually just glorified mobile parking lots.

Driving country roads in Italy was heaven.

Driving in Santorini Greece was an experience I'll NEVER forget.

I wouldn't say it was heaven though.

I grew up in rural Butler County, so I pretty much drove on nothing but two-lane roads until I moved to Pittsburgh to go to college. At night, I actually prefer to drive on rural country roads. Because they are infrequently traveled and you have plenty of warning from the light emitted from the headlights of oncoming cars, I typically drive right in the middle of the road. That way, if a deer or some other critter jumps out in front of me, it's possible to dodge to either side.

These are two shots of the Strada di Cortine the first one is in the village of Cortine itself, the second is about 2 miles further up nearer to San Donato. First image is to establish that it's a two-way road. The second is to verify the claim.
