Game 11 vs Crapitals - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:12 am

Pens win 5-2

- Pens missed Letang, adjusted and took advantage of a fragile Crapitals team
- Anyone else notice the Ovie-love given by Bobby & Steigy? Too much love, not warranted
- I thought that whenever a goalie lost his mask, immediate whistle? Sure, give MAF a penalty if he ditched it himself, but don't let a goalie get hurt (I googled an Enroth save with no mask)
- I had to chuckle, 1st period ... Joe Vitale leaping for a puck near center ice... JUMPING.... jumping joe vitale
- Despres looked shakier than normal, likely the Letangless factor
- Boychuk is improving in meshing (passes, skating, positioning) w/Geno & Neal, but don't see much of a shot/scoring threat so far
- Malkin's PP goal was sick. Everyone saw the gaping hole early, but he waited and scored on a wicked low probability shot
- Caps Dman Kundratek showed he's got some upside. GMRS, please bes perched and waiting for the Caps exploZion and scoop him up.
- Pens have an impressive record & spot in standings, but the competition so far are mostly bottom dwellers, let's not forget that.
- Martin love is funny. "He's outstanding" was the quote during the game. C'mon, he's righted the ship, playing well, but "outstanding"?
- Orpik took his first PIM, well deserved vs. Ovie as he needs to be checked and treated like every other player, superstar or otherwise.
- Loved Bortuzzo getting into Ovie's kitchen, Pens should take that matching penalty every time

I'll treat this as the legit Morning After Thread.

- PP looked good. Actually, the PP looked great. Martin handled the sub-in duty well. Here's the thing, however, the Caps PK is ultra conservative. Pens are still struggling with aggressive PK's - Flyers and Isles have shown this.
- Malkin's goal was unreal
- I'm going to assume Letang's injury is a groin. I'm surprised more guys haven't had groin problems this year.
- No way the Caps fire Oates. The thing they need the most right now is stability. And goaltending. It helps to not have two shooter tutors in the net.
- Fourth line was excellent once again. Glass stayed in control emotionally after OV took that unnecessary run at him.

- Malkin's goal was surgical.
- PP looking good, should be with that talent.
- Sid is back on his horse.
- Crapitals are a bad team, enjoy Jones/MacKinnin/Drouin!

:thumb: I have no big problem with multiple threads on the same topic, but I consider "Thoughts from the Morning After" as a Penspal trademark.

I like how when Orpik has interviewed during the game, he mentioned about Ovie leaving his feet again. It's like it's common knowledge to everyone except the officials that he does that.

I think people are allowing last year to factor into their opinion of him this year. He has played exceptionally well and is a significant reason the Pens are 8-3-0

Would you keep Martin on the 1st unit PP? He ran it pretty well. Letang struggles a bit at that role. Pretty much the only thing he struggles at.

I still saw alot of turnovers, am I off base with that?

Just the sight of Ovy makes me nauseous. His choppy spastic skating style, his whale tail hockey pants and that he can't make a hit without leaving his feet makes me wish someone would line him up and destroy his goofy ass. What a toolbag.

I'm loving watching Desprrs mature. He's been a nice surprise

Tyler Kennedy reminds me of Marty Straka- without the goals.

Flower looking better but his body language still looks like he's struggling with his confidence. Some beauty saves last night.

I almost fell asleep during the 1st period. Glad I hung on for the second.

Adam Oates looks beside himself. Fat Ted is running out of ex Caps to coach the team. Who's next? Bondra? Craig Laughlin?

My main thought about last night was how sad it was to see the Craps with no fight at all. I can't believe it. I felt BAD for them. What is wrong with me?!?

Paul Martin has played outstanding. Is there really an argument the other way? Unnoticeable, moved the puck well, and has 0 PIMs. He's not a Norris Candidate, but he's played sufficiently above expectations to qualify as "outstanding."

What good teams have the Pens beat? Boston and Tampa. We beat Jersey and Ottawa. It's an intraconference schedule. There isn't a lot of high caliber options out there.

I agree that the ref shouldn't have blown it dead for Fleury loosing his helmet but what the hell is the point of the rule then when you won't blow the whistle the only time the goalie is actually in danger? Should be treated just like the net coming off, if it's intentional then it's delay of game, otherwise blow the whistle.

But they should have waived it off due to the interference, not a penalty but Fleury falls because a cap is impeding his progress.

Other wise good game, loved Martin on the PP, he should stay on the top unit, Despres-Letang will be more effective anyways on the 2nd unit and Letang can work out his indecision there. Martin's wrister is always on net and he forces rebounds which is what we need, not fumbling at the blue line and wide shots.

Fleury looked like when he dropped to his butterfly his pads caught the back of Wolski's legs making Fleury go off balance.

there was about 30 games of evidence last year that martin shouldn't be on the power play. one game where guys were making sick plays doesn't erase reality.
