10 ton's really isnt that big. Not when an empty tractor trailer is roughly 15 tons.

Witnesses in a town 50 kilometers from Chelyabinsk, where the meteor is thought to have hit, said they saw a streaking object suddenly burst into flames, break apart and fall to the ground.

Bruce "Malkin to the Kings and Suspend Matt Cooke for a routine hockey play that ended badly" Garrioch is reporting that Sergei Gonchar's mother and sister, both in the meteor strike area, are fine.

Couldn't it have burnt up when entering the atmosphere?

I saw news reports this morning. It blew up 20 miles above ground and sent shrapnel in all directions. I saw buildings with holes in them. No really big crater, a lot of smaller hits.

Said it was 10 tons, and the size of a house.

Washington Post has a slideshow (I normally find slideshows loathsome) with some damage: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/met ... ml#photo=1

from the KHL's FB page

KHL Facebook Page wrote:Meteor damage at Arena Traktor to be assessed on Monday

The meteor shower which struck Chelyabinsk and its environs has also caused some disruption to the hockey season schedule. The emergency services have confirmed that the walls of the Arena Traktor were among those structures to suffer damage, and therefore large-scale events at the stadium have been postponed.

The sporting facilities will undergo an inspection by experts to assess the readiness of the arena to return to full operational use.

The results of the assessment will be made public on Monday, after which it will become clear whether the Chelyabinsk club can stage the first games of the play-offs. The knockout stages of the Gagarin Cup get underway on Wednesday, and as Traktor is already assured of a top four place in the Eastern conference, the team is due to start the play-offs with home games on the 21st and 22nd of February.

At this time, the meteor shower has not affected Traktor’s schedule, as the Chelyabinsk men finish their regular season campaign with a trip on the road to Magnitogorsk on Sunday. However, three events -today’s and tomorrow’s Youth Hockey League games between Belye Medvedi of Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk’s Stalnye Lisy and Saturday’s planned opening of the Traktor’s museum - have had to be postponed.

I am no physicist, but isn't it possible if you knew the trajectory of the object regardless of how fast it was moving you could hit it head on?

I'm no expert, but doesnt that look too circular to be a meteor?

Hmm, I thought they had to get up to the size of a football field for us, globally, to be in deep sh*t. Not that the size of a house would be jim-dandy or anything...
