Offsides should be reviewable. Briere's goal in the playoffs last year and this are horribly missed calls.

clearly egregious calls make for bad rule changes. I think only way they could do it would be to open up review of the entire goal sequence, as most instances are not directly off an offside entry as Duchene. And that's a whole Pandora's box I don't think we want to open.

Most games don't see 10 goals scored. If they can review goaltender interference, they should be able to review if a guy was offsides.

Most games don't see 10 goals scored. If they can review goaltender interference, they should be able to review if a guy was offsides.

So what are you going to do, every time someone is close to being offsides you let the play run its entire course and then after the whistle go back to see if the last 2 minutes of play even counted? Seems unrealistic and horribly inconvenient.

wow. that was bad. (just saw a replay). Much more blatant than the Briere play last year.

Duchene knew he was offside, but was quoted as saying he was told Nashville played it back in, which isn't supported by the replay.

That was much worse than the briere play.

Pens kept playing on the Briere goal, everyone completely mailed it in on the Duchene goal

I don't want plays reviewed in the booth. Especially not offsides. Most offsides are called correctly. Rarely do they result in a goal. It's not worth it to stop the game to make sure you get the right call. Especially when even when plays are reviewed you don't always get the right call.

If you want to watch a game that stops every 30 seconds, watch football or baseball. Otherwise, watch many other sports.

Reviewing only offsides that resulted in a goal wouldn't result an in extra stoppage, but a longer stoppage. You've got to live with a bad call or two in sports. The alternative isn't any better. It results in more stoppages and not always a more accurate call.

Plays this egregious don't happen often, give coaches one challenge per game that costs them a timeout. If they're right, they get another challenge and keep their timeout. And get to punch the linesman/ref that was wrong in the face. The play would be reviewed at the next whistle...but really coaches would only challenge on scoring plays, so play would already be stopped. It wouldn't really affect anything, they would never be used.

my gf (who is a local ref) had an interesting theory on this no call: the linesman was actually waving off the icing (the assist came from behind the red line) and by the time he realized he should've been calling offside it was too late.
a coaches challenge would solve this issue.

yes and no. the Nashville defense clearly touched the puck BUT it takes more than a touch to play it back in. Duchene played to the whistle like you're supposed to. the league will deal with that linesman in private and the Preds will get a break somewhere down the road.

Can't they RFID the puck and players and have this called electronically? Same with goals crossing the goal line.

RFID is crazy expensive. A more feasible solution might be to do what they do with curling using electro-magnets or whatever it is.

What you described is unrealistic, but to sensibly review scoring plays seems pretty reasonable.

How many times has something like this actually happened? I think it's kind of reactionary to make a rule, or add replay or whatever.

I think that is the best argument there is for adding challenges. Its the perfect response for the people flipping out that it will ruin games.
