Summer Olympics in Pittsburgh?

I remember back when it was in Atlanta, they needed a new baseball stadium, so they built the stadium and the Braves now play in Turner Field which was the olympic stadium. Thats the kind of thing thats ideal for an Olympic city. This wouldn't be that much more premature than the tearing down of Three Rivers was.

For one, they wouldn't play all the events at Heinz field. They need track and field facilities, tennis, swimming, cross country, etc. Events would be spread out all through Allegheny county. Even then, I really don't think they have facilities for all the events needed. I suppose some of the better high schools could house events if needed. Peters has a nice spread going on, upper St, Clair just re-built and Mt. Lebo is renovating. Not sure what they have up north.

North Allegheny has multiple fields spread throughout the campuses. You could split up track and field between the senior and intermediate highschools.

They also have a pool, but it's nowhere near Olympic size.

They would use Pitt's pool. But otherwise, pitt's track and field is probably at a level or below the high schools in the area.

I think the US Olympic Committee just sent that as a "thanks for asking about hosting the Olympics, but dream on" consolation letter.

A think a Winter Olympic is at least not laughable. Nowhere near enough facilities to run a Summer games.

At least with winter a lot of it could take place in the Laurel Highlands at the various resorts. Ice rinks could be laid at the Pete and Palumbo Center, Neville Island, etc for some of the smaller events like curling.

Maybe with an event like the olympics - they will enlarge the tunnels a few lanes in each direction, increase T service to everywhere, fix all the roads and bridges, and all sorts of other ridiculous improvements that would never happen but would be nice to think about.

Not all of the events are carried in the main city, but how far do most cities go when spreading out events? 30 miles? 50 miles? 90 miles?

Ha ha, I remember driving out of Pittsburgh to move to SC in 1990 and 28 was under construction.
