Not really, wouldn't have gotten handcuffed by a player saying he want to play with his brother. Much higher return on trade, plus might be more likely to consider trading Malkin.

Yea Toews is a much better player then Staal. I have yet to seen any evidence to discredit that.

when I was growing up, my family was poor and I had to sleep in the same room as my older brother... I think that ended when he turned 13... but that said, we weren't sod farmers... so I guess what happens on the farm stays on the farm. LOL

No re: marek and questioning Staal's "toughness." Dude played in the Montreal series after having a tendon in his foot severed by Subban's skate and a few days after surgery.

I was waiting for this day to see how the Pittsburgh media would spin it. I thought Jordan Staal was great when he was here. Best third-line center in the game with the ability to move up if need be, phenomenal defensively, blah, blah, blah. But at the end of the day, I root for what's on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. If he didn't want to be here, regardless of the reason, then good riddance. Sutter isn't THAT much of a step down and there's a lot of freed up cap space. I understand all the sentiments about playing with Eric and about never being more than a third-line center. My heart's just not warmed by those sentiments. Bottom line is that, in my eyes, minus the drama, he's not much different than Jagr - he's a guy who pretty much had anything he wanted here and made it known he didn't want to play here any more. He can go have fun with his brother and, in a few years, his other brother. He's not going to win a championship in Carolina. If you're a professional and you put playing with family over winning championships, then I question the direction of your heart and your mind.

I know I will get beat up for this, but I would rather have J Staal than Malkin. I think we could have a stronger more balanced team with Crosby and Staal as the top two centers. We could afford much better wingers and have a stronger team through all 4 lines.

Realistically, you are saving 2.7-3.5 mm max in Malkin v. Staal if you assume Malkin signs for 8.7-9.5 per. It's an additional 2nd/3rd line winger. or a 4/5 D-man.

With that savings and the cap space we now have, yes we could get a couple pretty good wingers. Geno just doesn't seem to play well when Sid is healthy and playing well, at least since the cup run.
