Hunting for Pens Jerseys

Postby blurryhaze312 on Mon Dec 17, 2012 10:36 pm

Hey all,

Does anyone have either of the following models of Pens jerseys, or know someone who does? I've been searching to buy for a while now. I'm looking for the authentic models from the late 80's or early 90's, not replicas.

Customized for a player, blank, doesn't matter to me:

or (the black one can have the patches or not, either way):

PM me! :D

good luck.

There are two sitting on ebay right now (one blank, another from '92 with Francis and additional patches). Both are $500+

Yea, and neither of them are going to get those prices. They are both price gougers, hoping someone with a ton of money is going to swing buy and pick them up.

The guy with the blank white one has been trying to sell it for over a year. I wouldn't buy it for even close to what he is asking for when considering the condition it is in...a ton of holes and stained to boot.

The guy selling the Francis has been trying to sell a few of his early 90's jerseys off and on for a couple years and always wants over double the actual top value of the shirts. It would explain, I suppose, why he's never sold one...

At any rate, I'm all over the ebay listings, I was just hoping someone around here might have something stashed away in a closet somewhere they they would be willing to sell to make some cash.

Still looking for and will probably never find that 1990 Lemieux all-star jersey(Pittsburgh game). I saw 3 people selling on ebay 2 for authentics over 1,000 and one replica for 350

Bumping up a bit now that the big regular season crowd is back.

Still looking for anything 1992 and earlier. Paying Paypal or $$$, whatever seller prefers.

Blurry...they are selling them at PensGear. I got one for 1/2 off at the Isles game.

PS - Replicas. Probably as close as you will get to authentic.

Good luck. The authentics are hard to find at a reasonable price. I've been trying on and off since 1997. Did find a period Maska replica (size is xl & no fight strap) Stevens jersey a few years back for next to nothing, black 1990 or so.

So I talked to someone at HOH. I can get a stitched pens home jersey with Neal on it for 199. Is that worth it at all?

I can say this about HOH. They get the same number/letter kits the team does. For some reason the Pens gear store at CEC does not.

Picked this one up yesterday http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaromir-Jagr-Pe ... true&rt=nc

Did I overpay? I paid 699$ for a Lemieux autographed the same jersey 3 years ago, new with tags.

How does one find these jerseys BLANK still NEW WITH TAGS? I have not seen one for the last 5 years on ebay. I find it hard to believe NO ONE wants to let them go?

Well, I hate to partially burst your bubble, but maybe a slight overpayment. An accurate jersey of that style goes for between $300-500ish depending on who you buy from. The patches on that one aren't accurate though - all reproductions. Also, the fight strap looks fake...which is odd because the Jersey itself looks legit. As for the autograph...I couldn't say because I'm not an auto guy myself.

Considering all of that, I wouldn't have paid over $350 at the absolute max. Gore are you certain the auto is legit?

It's rare to find them still with the hang tags... not many people bought jerseys back then, and that number is slashed even further when you consider next to no one leaves the tags on.

How much you looking to spend? There are some game worn jerseys from the years you are looking for. A Wendell Young with 3 patches from from 1992, and as for the 250 patch, does it matter the player on the jersey? A few of those are game worn too.

I would say patches definitely matter. It's one of the differences between real and fake.

But there are a ton of fake patches out there too. I am sure some who have actual authentic jerseys, have found knock off patches and got them sewn on, maybe not even knowing themselves they are knockoffs patches. It is a shame that so many knockoff stuff is out there.

Oh, I'm not actively searching for those models any more, and I'm not a game worn collector (I've bought from Joe before and visit his site regularly. Hoping for another expo soon.... :thumb:). Since last Dec I've found all the remaining jerseys I needed back to the 1988-89 season. Just trying to find pre-88 jerseys now - found a few!

Also found a few authentic 250 patches. One on eBay, and the other I e-mailed Pens Gear at the arena and asked if they happened to have any left I could buy. Girl said they had one left in her desk drawer that they had never sold. I asked how much it would cost and she said nothing, because it wasn't a saleable item any more - shipped and everything for free. Made my day!!

Thanks for the information.

But wow, I have around 100 Penguins jerseys and thought I knew what I was doing, but clearly I do not know my stuff good enough, which is sad, because I felt good about my knowledge!

The same seller sold a similar Lemieux for 680$ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mario-Lemieux-P ... true&rt=nc

You must teach me at least one thing now, how do you see from the picture below that the fight strap looks fake?

Holy crap...over 100?? I never knew you had that many. I'd also like to see them if you have pics up online!

As for the fight strap...it's not that pic, it's this one:

Spoiler:
Image

Look at the "X" that sews the fight strap to the jersey itself. It's a small detail, but the only time I've ever seen that small "X" was on a fake. Compare it to this one:

Spoiler:
Image

Keep in mind that I'm not saying the jersey is fake because of this one detail - because the rest of it looks great, aside from the patches - I've just never seen a fight strap attach like that on a legit jersey. There might be a valid reason why it looks that way, I've just never heard of one.

I used to have better pics online to illustrate the difference better, but I can't find them. I'll see what I can dig up later tonight.

**Note**

Another really odd detail on the Lemieux you link to that he sold recently...

On the bottom hem, that jersey he sold didn't have the NHL Shield next to the "CCM". With that type of Penguin crest, you will never see the jersey without the NHL Shield; the previous season though with the slightly different Penguin crest that had the "Gold Toe" and a shorter beak DID have "CCM" sans the Shield. (Reference the images I posted at the beginning of this thread.)

His particular jersey could possibly be a prototype, because that's the only possible legitimate reason I see behind that.
