Luckily for them, they may have gotten the offer sheet in before next year's trade deadline date. Will be interesting to see if there are any buyers for him, even with the $6.5 mil qualifier.

O'Reilly is better than an unknown first rounder and a third. That said, i'd have let him walk and been satisfied with the picks. He isn't worth that money.

Good move for the Flames. They can't draft anyway and ought to get at least 1 first back at the deadline if this is a sign of things to come. They badly need talented players and basically have no way to get them because they can't draft/develop and no one wants to go there in FA. Have to take a chance like this if you're them.

Edit: Oh, they matched.

With his apparent upside, 5 years @ 17 million would have been a mistake for the player. This deal works for the teams because it's relatively low risk. Seems like the Avs gambled and lost by not having him start the season. Plus, I think he would have signed for less than 5M/season in a short term deal in January.

O'Reilly is gambling that he's going to remain healthy--safe bet at his age--and that he'll attract at least a 3 year 7M contract next time which is probably a safe bet too.

this kind of reads as, "we're going to screw up our lottery pick because we suck at drafting, so let's settle on this good-not-great player who is a known commodity instead". the self awareness is impressive, but that's not what i would want to see as a Cal fan

Jay Feaster might consider sending Greg Sherman a thank-you note. Or perhaps a fine bottle of wine.

The general manager of the Colorado Avalanche appears to have inadvertently done the Calgary Flames a big favour by choosing to match the offer sheet signed by 22-year-old centre Ryan O’Reilly on Thursday.

In a bizarre twist to an already unusual story, Sportsnet.ca has discovered that the Flames were not only in danger of losing 2013 first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the Avs hadn’t matched the O’Reilly contract, but they also would likely have had to surrender the player before ever getting him in uniform.

That’s because O’Reilly would have needed to clear waivers before joining the team’s roster.

The unsigned forward spent part of the NHL lockout playing with his brother, Cal, for Magnitogorsk in Russia. According to Metallurg coach Paul Maurice and KHL spokesman Shawn McBride, he appeared in games on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 – both after the shortened NHL schedule was back underway – which meant that waivers were required before O’Reilly could return to the NHL as a free agent midway through the season.

Does the same apply for Colorado?

Does not apply for Colorado because of his previous time there. So would Jagr have been able to come back to the Rangers (his last NHL team) back when he was playing in the KHL, but not any other team without going through waivers?

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2013/03/01/calgary_flames_fortunate_colorado_avalanche_match_ryan_oreilly/
Because O’Reilly spent the last three years in Colorado, he’s not viewed as a free agent who is joining a NHL team from Europe midway through the season. As a result, he does not need to clear waivers before suiting up for the Avs again.

The circumstances would have been much different if Calgary’s offer sheet was accepted.

I was actually wondering that. Because the rule is that you have to have the rights of the player or else he needs waivers, but I've never seen this scenario before...very interesting.

Re: Jagr. No. Because his rights were lost to unrestricted free agency.

What a clumsy move that would have been for Calgary after all...holy cow...

there should probably be some rule that says you can't offer sheet a guy who would have to clear waivers.

...or i guess certain GM's should be better at their job

That's how Nabakov ended up with the Isles....I think.

Wings signed him, he was playing overseas, had to go through waivers, got picked up by NYI.

He was just on NHL network doing an interview. Guy says "you know" more often than 99% of the population. I'm sure he was nervous, but it was almost every 3rd word out of his mouth.
