You don't think making your 7 year old child the centerpiece of your personal fight for transgender equality is basically robbing that child of enjoying a relatively normal and happy upbringing? I can't speak to the other children, but I find their actions self-serving.

No, I don't, but I think you make a lot of assumptions regarding the parents' motives.

Folks, we're still fighting the War on Terror. By the way, naming rights still available. Call me, Velveeta. And the War on Terror just turned 12 years old, which explains why it's into remote-controlled planes.

Anyone following the Bob Woodward story?

It's actually pretty incredible how closely the Obama Administration has echoed the Nixon Administration, right down to the intimidation, opacity, etc.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2013/02/27/woodward_white_house_warned_me_youre_going_to_regret_this.html

BLITZER: What was said?

WOODWARD: It was said very clearly, you will regret doing this.

BLITZER: Who sent that e-mail to you?

WOODWARD: Well, I'm not going to say.

BLITZER: Was it a senior person at the White House?

WOODWARD: A very senior person. And just as a matter -- I mean, it makes me very uncomfortable to have the White House telling reporters, 'you're going to regret doing something that you believe in, and even though we don't look at it that way, you do look at it that way.' I think if Barack Obama knew that was part of the communication's strategy, let's hope it's not a strategy, that it's a tactic that somebody's employed, and said, 'Look, we don't go around trying to say to reporters, if you, in an honest way, present something we don't like, that, you know, you're going to regret this.' It's Mickey Mouse. (The Situation Room, February 27, 2013)

Scalia is scary.

I actually agree with Scalia in that the law is antiquated and needs overturned. It's not fair to those states to hold them to a different standard than the vast majority of the country just because they happened to be "more racist" 50+ years ago.

It's not 50+ years ago. As was pointed out during argument yesterday, the plaintiff in this case - Shelby County, Alabama - was found to be engaging in discriminatory practices as recently as 2008.

lolololol@Bob Woodward:

Sperling to Woodward:
I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. I do understand your problems with a couple of our statements in the fall -- but feel on the other hand that you focus on a few specific trees that gives a very wrong perception of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim ... My apologies again for raising my voice on the call with you. Feel bad about that and truly apologize.

Woodward responds:

Gene: You do not ever have to apologize to me. You get wound up because you are making your points and you believe them. This is all part of a serious discussion. I for one welcome a little heat; there should more given the importance. I also welcome your personal advice.

One, that's "regret" in that he thinks Woodward is wrong. He will regret taking that position because he believes it will be shown to be misguided.

Two, Woodward -- a Washington institution -- felt so threatened that he sent a response that is pretty much "No worries bro."

Three, Nixon would definitely be proud of a White House staffer apologizing to a REPORTER OF ALL PEOPLE for raising his voice while calling him a "friend." Come on Shad. This is a joke.

No worries. This one is Woodward being a crybaby though. He looks silly, unless he comes up with something else to show he actually was threatened.

I'm honestly just shocked that he would make this big of a frigging deal over that. He makes it sound like the staffer was sharpening a knife or cleaning his gun when he told him "YOU GONNA REGRET SAYING THAT, BOY". I would think someone that has been in the biz for as long as he has would be able to ascertain the difference. (or maybe he can, and his inflated sense of ego made him think he could get away with such a claim)

I was referring back to the original story, and was basing my assumption on a pretty well-documented track record of opacity from the Administration. Hell, there have been widespread complaints throughout the mainstream media outlets about how inaccessible the president has been. Coming from a journalist as well-known as Woodward, I lent credence to his claim.

i think there's a little more substance to the nature of this child than shaf is giving the family credit for, but regardless - you can't have this kid using the girls' room at a school under any circumstance.

It sounds like Woodward is the one that needs to own up.

Maybe there's more to it (?), but I thought he was better than that.

Mellon pays bonuses after delaying annual raises

http://triblive.com/news/allegheny/3589 ... z2MbE2z4r4

Bank of New York Mellon Corp. paid about $460 million in annual bonuses to managers at the end of February — days after it told lower-paid workers their annual merit increases will be delayed.

Lets do some math from that Trib article:

$460,000,000 in executive bonuses.
Based in New York, BNY Mellon employs about 49,500 worldwide.

That could come out to affording $9,292.92 in bonuses for EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR EMPLOYEES.

Instead the executive fatcats get richer while the working bees get shut out. Very typical of 21st century american business.

My company had $5 billion in profits but still capped merit increases again this year at 1.5% if you are lucky enough to even get one.

This is why I need to be my own boss.

"Early this morning, there was a report of a person wearing a hood and robe resembling a KKK outfit between South and the Edmonia Lewis Center and in the vicinity of African Heritage House," Oberlin President Marvin Krislov wrote in an email to the school's 2,800 students, faculty and staff. "This event, in addition to the series of other hate-related incidents on campus, has precipitated our decision to suspend formal classes and all non-essential activities for today, Monday, March 4, 2013, and gather for a series of discussions of the challenging issues that have faced our community in recent weeks."

Just thought it was interesting. Thoughts? Perhaps further insight from obhave?

http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/01/29/3207543/fbi-raids-west-palm-beach-office.html

FBI agents late Tuesday night raided the West Palm Beach business of an eye doctor suspected of providing free trips and even underage Dominican Republic prostitutes to U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. — who has denied what he calls the “fallacious allegations.”

Agents gathered at the medical-office complex of Dr. Salomon Melgen, a contributor to Menendez and other prominent politicians, to start hauling away potential evidence in several vans.

The investigation is believed to be focusing on Melgen’s finances and the allegations about Menendez’s trips and contact with prostitutes. A spokesman for Menendez could not be reached for comment, nor could Melgen.

But then, days before Menendez was about to start leading the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as chairman, reporters started receiving a 58-page dossier of emails between a Miami FBI agent and a tipster who claimed that some of the prostitutes had been underage.

“I’m not going to respond to the fallacious allegations of your story,” Menendez told the Daily Caller on Monday when a reporter caught up with him on a train in Washington.

An escort who appeared on a video claiming that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) paid her for sex has told Dominican authorities that she was instead paid to make up the claims and has never met or seen the senator, according to court documents and two people briefed on her claim.

The woman said a local lawyer had approached her and a fellow escort and asked them to help frame Menendez and a top donor, Salomon Melgen, according to affidavits obtained by The Washington Post.
