******* smashed my window last night

Postby itissteeltime on Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:10 am

Woke up to a smashed car window. I think all they took was a pos 10 year old gps. They left behind probably a thousand dollars in hockey equipment. Whats the cheapest way to get this fixed?

When this happened to me last week, my wife put in a comp claim on insurance and Safe Lite came to my parking garage downtown and replaced it in about 45 minutes. $185.

Their website quoted me about $400. Speedy glass quotes about $200.

What kind of vehicle is it? and what window? Some auto body shops can handle this in an hour or so, at $50-75.. and if its not a super expensive car, a junkyard can get you a window for 20-30$

If its a honda civic or accord, you can find a replacement in most parking lots.

Also, something i always follow - if i have nothing nice in my car and im parking in a high theft neighborhood i just leave the doors unlocked. that way when they break in and dont get anything I dont have to replace a window.

The nice people that stole stuff from my car one of the times just used a hanger between the roof and window to pull up the lock. No damage. Boom.

Often if you go through your insurance and use one of their window companies, they will waive the deductible and you only pay the balance. I think I paid about $100.00 last time. Also, I have never tipped a window repair guy. But, maybe I should have?

I had my car broken when I was in college twice. The first time, I left the car unlocked, went in the next morning and noticed that all my change was gone and my glove box and middle console were left open. The only thing they got other than my change was a spare key for my car that I had stored in the glove box. Total fail on my part. Surprisingly, they didnt take the car (I assume they figured that if they had a key, they could come back and rummage through it as much as they liked). Since they key worked on the doors, ignition, and trunk, it cost me $500 to get all of the locks re-keyed.

About 9 months after that, my car was broken into again, except this time they smashed the window. Took my binder of CD's, which was about 150 in total. I had most of them backed up, but since most were originals and not copies, it still stung. The thing that really sucked about it is that property you lose in your car as a result of break-ins is covered under renter's / homeowner's insurance, which I didnt have.

When my window was smashed, I had it fixed through my insurance company's preferred window replacement people, and I think that I paid $50.

Its covered, but unless you have a good laptop or something, you probably aren't going to lose enough to justify paying the (likely) $1000+ deductible.

It's just crazy how no one hears the window being smashed in time to see the theft. Not saying it's easy to hear, because the same thing happened to my buddy back in college. We never even heard it.

But the one time we accidentily (maybe not) shot out another friends of ours car window with a BB gun, it sounded like a bomb exploded.

The window is fixed, i paid 183. I wish they had knocked on my door and asked for my gps, i would have handed it over. From now on i plan on leaving it unlocked with no valuables. Only thing that sucks is i like to leave my hockey bag in the trunk, now ill have to take it in and out of the house ever day.
