2013 Fantasy Baseball Talk

Postby columbia on Mon Mar 18, 2013 4:06 pm

I need to draft a 1B this afternoon (for a standard Yahoo league):

Corey Hart, Garrett Jones or Adam Dunn?

This is round 7 of the draft (plus the 5 keepers per team), so it's slim pickings.

Standard offensive categories? If it doesn't include OBP, but you can take the batting average risk, take Dunn. If it does include OBP, take Dunn. If you can't take the BA risk, Hart, I guess, but he may not start the season.

If everyone already has 1st basemen (which they probably do if you're down to those 3) why don't you just wait?

Just drafted in my other (non-LGP) league tonight. 12 team mixed. 5x5. I had the 4th overall pick

C: Carlos Santana (1B)
1B: Paul Goldschmidt
2B: Danny Espinosa (SS)
3B: Todd Frazier (OF)
SS: Jose Reyes
1B/3B: Chris Davis (OF)
2B/SS: Jean Segura
OF: Andrew McCutcheon
OF: Shin-Soo Choo
OF: Michael Morse
OF: Michael Cuddyer (1B)
OF: Adam Eaton
UTIL: Kyle Seager (3B)
BN: Michael Saunders
BN: Dee Gordon

P: Gio Gonzalez
P: Matt Moore
P: James Shields
P: Jarrod Parker
P: A.J. Burnett
P: Matt Garza
P: Rafael Soriano
P: Jason Grilli
P: Jose Veras
BN: Brandon Beachy

I'll IR Beachy and probably add McCann or a Span, Bourjos, Brantley type.

I am very happy overall. My hitters, without taking my bench slots into account, are almost completely dead on with my target totals in each category (to finish 3rd in each category). Most lacking in batting average. Pitching sets up to be 1st in Ks, 4th in wins, trouble in saves, and who knows on ratios. had my pick sniped a couple times and didn't make the best picks when I was thrown off.

Totally forgot that my money league draft was last night...probably for the best that i just got an auto picked team, i've been terrible in head 2 head formats.

1.Joey Votto(Cin - 1B)
2. José Bautista(Tor - OF)
3.Yoenis Céspedes(Oak - OF)
4.Cliff Lee(Phi - SP)
5.Pablo Sandoval(SF - 3B)
6.Brett Lawrie(Tor - 3B)
7.Max Scherzer(Det - SP)
8.Shin-Soo Choo(Cin - OF)
9.Jonathan Papelbon(Phi - RP)
10.Carlos Gómez(Mil - OF)
11. Wilin Rosario(Col - C)
12.Joe Nathan(Tex - RP)
13.Greg Holland(KC - RP)
14.Derek Jeter(NYY - SS)
15.Dan Uggla(Atl - 2B)
16.Rafael Betancourt(Col - RP)
17.Josh Beckett(LAD - SP)
18.Alex Cobb(TB - SP)
19.Brandon Belt(SF - 1B)
20.Jason Kubel(Ari - OF)
21.Ryan Doumit(Min - C,OF)
22.Phil Hughes(NYY - SP)
23.Andy Pettitte(NYY - SP)

Dropping Hughes for Segura to have a shortstop in April. But overall, not bad, the 3-6 picks aren't ideal but getting 4 closers and having Votto and Bautista is great for power and OPS will be good. Plus if Uggla bounces back and Jeter does what he did last year that's a great 2B/SS combo.

Is that a 12-teamer? I don't really mind that team too much for being stuck with as an auto-pick. I love Choo in the 8th. It's weird that it stuck you with two 3Bs, but that position isn't great so that is probably excellent trade bait. I would think you'll need to improve SP, though. Don't mind Lee, but 4th is early for him, I'd think. Cobb's solid. I like the Segura idea. He's going to surprise, I think. Look for good average, good speed Altuve-like first full season.

12 teams.

Yeah, my starters are a disaster, wins are out of the question. Hopefully i'll always win saves and era with the 4 closers. Nice to have a big strikeout guy like scherzer though. But yeah, really don't care for pandoval and lawrie back to back. Hopefully Lawrie has a breakout, but i don't think that's in the cards.

Everyone go add Jose Fernandez, especially those of you in keeper/dynasty leagues.

I started both Weaver and Cueto today.
That's about the best you can hope for, in a situation like that.

Burnett killed it for me in the K & K/9 departments....not so much otherwise.

So I only have 2 relievers: Medlen from ATL and Motte from STL. I have to play 2 relievers, but Motte is out till May.

Problem is, I don't really have a guy in my lineup I want to drop. Anyone have any insight on which of these guys I could drop?

C: Y. Molina
1B: P. Goldschmidt, M. Teixeira, N. Swisher, and LoMo (LoMo and Swisher also have OF eligibility)
2B: D. Ackley
3B: E. Longoria
SS: D. Espinosa (also has 2B eligibility)
OF: A. Pagan, Ichiro, B.J. Upton, N. Cruz, Jayson Werth

SP: Z. Greinke, D. Haren, I. Kennedy, J. Peavy, CC Sabathia, P. Maholm
RP: K. Medlen (also has starter eligibility), J. Motte

Can't you DL Tex? If not, drop Morrison or Werth. Both should be easily replaceable later and you've got plenty of OF depth.

No DL. Just bench spots.

Not much to pick up, though. Should I go for Valverde? Is there someone who may have gone undrafted that would be a good pickup?

No to valverde. I assume Kenley Jansen was drafted? Parnell? Boggs, or a detroit reliever? Or get a good reliever who might end up getting saves like Cook or Pestano. Could also get Madson and stash until he comes back.

I need saves guys. It's a H2H point based league, not categories. Saves and wins are the big point getters. Jansen isn't a good idea because the Dodgers signed Brandon League to close.

I think it's 3 points an inning, -1 for every hit against, earned run and walk, .5 for a K, and 7 for a win or save. Loss is a -5.

Basically, I need a guy who will get wins or saves. I need closers, not set-up guys.

Or I can just wait out the Motte thing. It says he'll be back mid-April.

You're right, setup guys won't help in that format. I'd still say Jansen though. He's a much better pitcher than League, will close soon, and the Dodgers don't care about money. Huge k guy who will be similar to Kimbrel once he gets the job.

Kind of off-topic, but I joined a 12-team Yahoo auction BB league. I'd never tried their auction format and was pretty pleased with the simplicity of it (I run a couple hockey leagues and am considering switching to auction style). My biggest concern was how the auto-draft would bid on players, but Yahoo put a default dollar value on each player and the auto-draft would go to that limit and no higher. Kind of interesting...I also noticed they burned through their money quickly and had to pick 8-10 players at the end for $1. Hindsight being 20/20 I think I overpaid for Butler and Castro and got some decent bargains at SP

Anyway, here's my roster ($260 budget):
C - Yadier Molina $14
1B - Billy Butler $22
2B - Dan Uggla $8
3B - Pedro Alvarez $4
SS - Starlin Castro $26
OF - Josh Hamilton $38
OF - Jose Bautista $35
OF - Carlos Gomez $10
UT - Alfonso Soriano $3
UT - Carlos Beltran $10
BN - Manny Machado $1
BN - Nelson Cruz $11

SP - Ryan Vogelsong $6
SP - Jordan Zimmermann $11
SP - Jarrod Parker $6
SP - Anibal Sanchez $6
SP - Ian Kennedy $7
SP - Jake Peavy $8
RP - Jim Johnson $9
RP - Jason Grilli $5
BN - Lance Lynn $3
BN - Hiroki Kuroda $3
BN - Ryan Dempster $1

1. It's an auto draft league

2. Medlen gets starts, but counts as a reliever. Wins are just as good as saves.
