Andrej Sustr, a 6'8 Czech defenceman who plays at Nebraska-Omaha, is on the All-WCHA team this year. Lots of teams are lining up to get him signed as soon as his season ends.

Wasnt Sustr ,big pleasant surprise in camp, who on the end didnt get signed?

Couldn't get signed unless he dropped out of school. I hope Shero gets him to sign here.

When he has a big game, ROOT can refer to him as Brent Sustr

I'd think we would have the inside track on getting Sustr signed, with him attending the camp here. But with our logjam of defensive prospects, he might think he has a easier road of getting to the NHL elsewhere.

possibly less of a logjam come the trade deadline...who knows. I am assuming he is going to be compared to Chara

He was invited to Tampa's camp as well. And about half the league has shown interest in him, so he has his pick of the litter certainly...

We don't really have anyone of his mold in the system besides Bortuzzo and maybe Dumoulin? We have a lot of UFA's coming up in 2 years, he could have an opportunity to step in even next year and play a role if he earns it.

I can't imagine he would have any interest in playing on a team that has an overflow of defensemen on their AHL team.

Aside from really Morrow, Dumoulin and Samuelsson everyone else is expendable for the sake of prospect development. WBS had Strait, Despres and Bortuzzo for half the season and Sneep was moved after he was called up too.

Reese, Mormina, Wild and Grant would not bump Sustr out of the top 4 presumably. And frankly, looking at the bottom pairings the talent took a huge hit after the lockout ended.

I don't know. Mikey can correct me if he thinks otherwise, but, from what I've seen his mobility isn't too spectacular. He seems to be more Boris Valabik and less Zedeno Chara.

Decent mobility for a guy his size. You have to take into account that he probably hasn't been 6-foot-8 for all that long. If you all of a sudden got 5 inches taller, you would have trouble walking much less skating. I don't know a ton about his history, but I assume he hasn't been like this since he was 15. I think there's a solid skating base, not the best thing ever. But Chara isn't an amazing skater either. When I saw Tyler Myers when he was 16 or 17 he looked like Bambi On Ice, he could barely stand up out there. This isn't too bad, it's pretty fluid, it's a good start, IMO. He's no Jay Bouwmeester, but this is more than serviceable in my opinion.

No. I think he is on record though at some point fairly recently saying he wanted to get his college degree, which would mean staying another year.

Things can change quickly though.

Understood. Age probably factors into some of what I've seen. Agreed that Chara isn't a great skater either. People should check out recaps of his daily performances over in Europe during the lockout on those giant rinks they play in. :slug:

I could see someone like the Islanders pulling this, gambling to get another Chara to trade away.

everybody and their mother wants him and, iirc, the pens camp wasn't the only hes played for (TBL?). Rangers and Flyers both want him badly.
