How Ruined Would Your Favorite Call Be If...

This guy did the announcing?

For mine. Gary Thorne calling Mario's goal in his last game before retirement in 1997. Oh that would be terrible.

This isn't directed at you only, but why do people let announcers ruin the experience of the sporting event? They are just background noise.

Announcers can really make a call sound special though.

Most of the time they are background noise but take for example the call Al Michaels did at the Miracle on Ice, it fit perfectly. That call is remembered almost as much as the actual win. It added to the moment.

I'm sure there are many others, but that is the first one that came to mind.

I seem to notice when color guys "bring something," more than play by play. There is always so much discussion on play by play guys on this site, I honestly never notice them at all

I love that the last game John Madden ever called was the Steelers Super Bowl XLIII victory.

This... I remember lots of Mike Lange's calls, but it doesn't bother me to hear Steigy's calls on TV, replay...

Also, Joe Buck calls a mean ballgame. Not sure why people 'hate' him.

Joe Buck is a pox on the profession of broadcasting.

Surely you must be confusing him for his legendary father, Jack Buck.

You'll have to explain the groupthink, because I just don't see how he's so bad.

I enjoy Buck calling baseball games, not so much for football. It's just unfortunate for his reputation that his dad was one of the best of all time.

If you're in the broadcasting booth and you witness something spectacular, it is your obligation to show enthusiasm when you describe it. If you can't handle that duty, you are a turd of a broadcaster. It's not as big of a deal in baseball, since "spectacular" is non-existent. But look no further than buck's call of "the helmet catch" to see why everyone hates him.

So you're saying that announcers need to tell viewers when something special happens in a game, and Joe Buck does't get exited enough when something special happens, and that makes it less special?

Joe Buck is a terrible baseball announcer. He knows very little about the game.

Per the OP, I actually enjoyed his call on freese's walk-off homerun in game 6 of the WS two years ago, and yes, it is partially ruined because it was joe buck.

Joe Buck goes off on tangents than would make Steigy blush, he's a terrible announcer and he even stated he hates watching sports. He is a huge jerk who would be working in a casual male store if it wasn't for his father.

Artie Lang on the Joe Buck show is a priceless watch. Language NSFW if you happen to look it up.

:thumb: I love it.

I actually looked back at that freese's walk-off call. I think one of the reasons I like it is because joe buck sounds so disinterested about such a big play. It's almost as if it pains him to call another game... which I enjoy.

I disagree with the assertion in the OP because if Joe Buck was making the call it's highly unlikely that said call would have ever made it to the top of my list.

That said, a call - great or awful - doesn't diminish or elevate a moment. "Do you believe in miracles?!" was not necessary to make Lake Placid one for the ages..... but it does give us context and a handy way of recalling the moment.
