That was the big shocking reveal though. The thing is, this actually could have been a good movie with a few tweaks.
-play up the ambiguity in the relationship between Megan and her mom. It's pretty blatantly stated that she's just a bad mom who blames her for her step dad being in jail. Take that out. Megan was damaged enough without it. Then you have the mother being overly protective because she sees that her daughter is on a dark path, and then she had a reason for being intrusive and overbearing.
-have more scenes of josh lurking in the background. That 1st scene with her in the woods was actually pretty well crafted.
-I'd like to see the ending scaled back a bit, but that's not really fair for this movie. that's the story it's telling. But it's cheap. Even if you want to say it's a warning about kids doing stupid crap online, you negate that with Amy. I think it's a more effective statement if you paint Megan as an even more reckless and out of control kid, and add a bit of subtlety with the mother genuinely caring about her and seeing she is getting into some dangerous territory and not knowing how to deal with it, but still acting out of concern. Maybe have Amy be a little less removed from Megan's wild ways. Not making her a slut or anything... Just have her maybe a little romanced by her lifestyle.
I get the message is don't do creepy stuff with creepy dudes or creepy things will happen. I get that. But by removing Amy and making her 100% innocent, I guess it makes for a more effective ending, but you're basically adding the second moral of "if your friend gets kidnapped, keep your mouth shut or you'll be buried alive in a barrel." It sort of breaks that first message of needing to watch what you do with strangers.
Anyway, I've dedicated way too much thought to this pile of garbage.
