There must be statuatory survivorship and property rights. If government doesn't maintain a standard, who do you suggest would?

Twitter is rumbling about Assad having been shot by a bodyguard.
It's not clear if any of this is actually true.

Revealed – the capitalist network that runs the world

When the team further untangled the web of ownership, it found much of it tracked back to a "super-entity" of 147 even more tightly knit companies - all of their ownership was held by other members of the super-entity - that controlled 40 per cent of the total wealth in the network. "In effect, less than 1 per cent of the companies were able to control 40 per cent of the entire network," says Glattfelder. Most were financial institutions. The top 20 included Barclays Bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and The Goldman Sachs Group.

John Driffill of the University of London, a macroeconomics expert, says the value of the analysis is not just to see if a small number of people controls the global economy, but rather its insights into economic stability.

Concentration of power is not good or bad in itself, says the Zurich team, but the core's tight interconnections could be. As the world learned in 2008, such networks are unstable. "If one [company] suffers distress," says Glattfelder, "this propagates."

Capitalism is inherently a good thing. The rampant abuses of the system are not.

It's Gay Day 1 at SCOTUS. The audio of the arguments will be made public after around 1 pm EST today, so that will make for some good listening. (At least I hope it will)

Saw an interesting thing on TV last night; the two attorneys who will be arguing against Prop 8 are the current Solicitor General (Donald Verrilli) and Ted Olsen, the Solicitor General under GWB. I knew Olsen and David Boies were the primary litigators, and that the Obama administration sought permission to file an amicus brief. But I didn't realize that they had decided to have Verrilli pair with Olsen for argument.

The supporter's attorney is some something called a "Chuck Cooper".

It's embarassing that in 2013 we still waste time determining if one group of citizens of this country have the same rights as another group.

Youre right. We need to end discrimination against unmarried people of all orientations. Close the tax loopholes, eliminate the unjust insurance rates, and stop societal stigmas surrounding single people :)

It's amazing how far people go to deliberately remain oblivious to what we do in other parts of the world. Personally, I think it's a result of two-party politics; where one side can only discuss political issues through the lens of what the other party is doing "wrong". The rest is all fringe.

We killed 69 school children in one of those strikes.

Listening to the oral arguments from Hollingsworth right now. Cooper sounded timid and small, constantly clearing his throat. He was not a solid advocate, especially when he went down the 'procreative purpose' line of argument.

Based on the questioning, (and at least one of the contributors at SCOTUSblog agrees) there's a very real possibility where we could find ourselves in a situation where there are three votes to dismiss the case as "improvidently granted" (meaning certiorari should not have been granted in the first place), two to find the plaintiffs supporting Prop 8 have no standing to bring the case, three to vote to reverse the appellate court ruling, and one to affirm.

Regardless of the particulars of the final outcome, I don't think we're going to have a grand ruling from this case that's applicable nationwide. It's shaping up that the DOMA case tomorrow will likely be far more reaching in its, er, reach.

So they'd dismiss the case and the 9th Circuit ruling would stand?

I'm not sure what the specific disposition of the case would be if that's how the votes fall, but yes -- it basically means that there would be 6 votes that would end up with Prop 8 being knocked aside.

Prop 8 should stand, whether or not you think ballot initiatives should be constitutional is another issue.

DOMA should be overturned, it's unconstitutional. If a state will marry two people that license needs to be recognized nationwide juts like a drivers license. And this should also apply to other things like a concealed weapons permit.

This is more about State's rights in both cases, neither has anything really to do about deciding for or against gay marriage.

The conclusion seems to be that child and civilian deaths are dramatically decreasing relative to the overall deaths. That's a positive, right? "Other" is taking off.

Frankly, I'm most upset that a horse was apparently killed in a recent attack.
