I said it last year but I really think it'd make sense to trade Niskanen unless they end up moving Letang instead. Despres can do what Niskanen does but is cheaper. Niskanen is a UFA after next season and isn't someone they figure to keep, again unless they don't keep Letang. If they move him and let Kennedy go (which seems like a certainty) they could probably keep two out of Iginla, Morrow, and Dupuis.

That makes sense to me. Not sure how much Morrow has left though. Half of a short season is one thing, but if you're expecting him to give you 100 games a season moving forward, not so sure about that.

This is the only thing i could come up with that retains guys but i had to do a few things:

1. Buyout Orpik
2. Iginla takes a paycut (And a unrealistic one at that)
3. Morrow takes a paycut
4. Kennedy is released
5. Murray is let go

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Pascal Dupuis ($2.000m)
Jarome Iginla ($4.000m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Brenden Morrow ($2.000m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) / Matt Cooke ($1.800m)
Tanner Glass ($1.100m) / Joe Vitale ($0.550m) / Craig Adams ($0.675m)
DEFENSEMEN
Paul Martin ($5.000m) / Kris Letang ($3.500m)
Matt Niskanen ($2.300m) / Mark Eaton ($0.725m)
Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)
Robert Bortuzzo ($0.578m) /
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
OTHER
Buyout: Brooks Orpik ($0.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,825,833; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $3,474,167

I also left money on the table to account for the raise letang would get the following season. Plus, this really hinges on the idea that Geno will take 8.7 again.

I would trade Glass and have the 4th line be the "league minimum line."

It's pretty close to that now except for Glass:

Glass 1.100
Adams 0.675
Vitale 0.550
Jeffrey 0.575

Our bottom 4 avg. 0.725, that has to be one of the league's lowest...

Re-signing Morrow is probably not a top priority. Two more years with Iggy would be super sweet, though.

I was thinking about letting Orpik go as well.. Harrington can be NHL-er in 2014-15.. But you forgot BB on this lineup.. :)

I wouldn't be surprised to see Nisky get traded now for a guy like Smid. He's good as a top 4 but Smid would compliment Letang so great and help on the PK. And I'd rather have Murray on the team as a strong #6 and dump Engellend and Nisky to pay for him.

Back to Morrow, Flyers will offer him $6 million a year just to spite us :)

But you never know, the Cup changes everything, he could sign again if he fits and has fun, 3 years, $7 million would be good for both sides? might take more.

Smid for Niskanen, I doubt the Oilers would do that trade. If Smid is on the trade market, he will fetch more than Niskanen. In reality somebody will pay him over 4 mil/year once he hits free agency in July and I doubt it will be Shero, unless we are dumping Orpik to free up cap space.

I had Francois Leroux flashbacks last night. Murray skates like kids on my son's mite team.

Nickname has to be Dump Truck, no? Make it so, Steigy.

Actually his nickname is "Crankshaft". He wouldn't say why it was that, but...
