Anyone into console emulators?

Postby pittsoccer33 on Mon Apr 01, 2013 1:14 pm

I'm pretty sure I've seen some posts before about guys who do video game emulation on their PCs. After watching Wreck it Ralph I decided to try reliving my time playing 2600 and NES.

Most of the emulator/rom sites look like virus magnets. Right now I'm not even worried about finding games to play, mostly just trying to find a good site to help me set up a proper front end and fine tune the controls.

I tried Nestopia first but I couldn't seem to get any of the d-pad controls working cleanly. JNES is a bit better.

Beyond cleaning that up I'd like to come up with a seemless way to go from HTPC front end, to gaming front end, to playing, and then back. I just need to be pointed in the right direction of a good forum or FAQ that isn't on some kind of torrent or warez site.

Vimm.net is a great place for emulators and roms. I'm not sure if he has atari on there but gameboy, nintendo, sega, SNES, N64, Playstation. All that is on there. The site has been around forever and gets pretty frequent updates. No worries about misclicking on a link and getting adware or anything like that...

There's also the MAME emulator, I forget which site is best for that but that allows you to play all your favorite arcade games.

Software developers have come up with ways to trick your PC into thinking its a Nintendo NES, or an arcade machine, or an Atari Jaguar. Doing it is called emulating.

They've also figured out how to get the data off the old cartridges and CDs. The data from them is called a rom.

If you have emulator software installed, and you download a rom of your favorite game, you can play it on your PC.

This is a screen shot of what I was screwing around with this weekend. I was trying to use my home theater PC's movie library software to organize these, and then launch them from there. Didn't work out how I planned but I think I'm on the right track

I used CoolRom to get all of my emulators and ROMs.

Genesis, NES, Gameboy. No viruses, as well.

I know there are some emulators available on Android. I hope the developers are able to tailor versions to the Ouya gaming system. If the controls for the various systems were fine tuned to use Ouya's control I think it would be the ultimate emulator system.

I have a USB plug in for my comp that takes N64 and Playstation controllers. The playstation controller really works for everything though. Just have to get used to the Z trigger in a different place. Set the buttons and off you go. Works great for everything from NES up to Playstation.

I have a Logitech PS2 style PC remote. For example I was playing Legend of Zelda - a game that allows you to move in four different directions. I am having trouble getting it to move accurately in the direction I want him to go.

I won a Wii about a year ago and have yet to even open it. I know the remote is bluetooth based and can be used with a PC. I was thinking of buying a bluetooth adapter and giving that remote a whirl since it looks a bit similar to the NES one (and I wouldnt need the USB extension cords).

yeah it will definitely work perfectly with ouya. i already use my ps3 conroller with my android tablet and all the emulators for android allow you to assign each button to whatever you would want it to do. its pretty simple. no doubt will be as good or better with ouya. hopefully my ouya arrives this week.

There are emulators available for just about everything for Linux. In particular, I've used my Fedora box to play NES and SNES games. I use a corded XBox 360 controller. That reminds me; I have a save for Blaster Master I need to get back to sometime in here.

15 years ago or so, I found a zip file online that had every NES game ever released. I stil have it on one of my hard drives, but can't find a good emulator that plays nice with my HTPC.

I remember back then trying to get N64 games to run on my pentium I laptop. Frustration city.

As I said earlier in the thread vimm.net has just about everything you could want. Computers these days have no issue running N64 or playstation 1 games. There's still a lot of issues with PS2 currently as for the most part roms won't work and the emulators only work with an illegal download of the country code file and actual discs and even then they seem to run choppy.

Installs a plugin in your web browser and you can play everything on that site. TONS of games available

This is the only solution most people need. Watch out though, it can kill your productivity at work.

2 great and sad accomplishments from my emulator days in college:

1) beating contra several times without losing a life
2) beating legend of Zelda from start to finish in one day

Great for obvious reasons. Sad because I was an 18 year old in Miami and I was in my dorm room playing Nintendo
