Today was a light day. I spent the day knocking on doors in a little old place in lovely Mckeesport called Crawford Village. Among the people I talked to was, a 95 yearold woman who owes my company 2k. She is my buddy actually, she is a old school "die cracker die" kinda gal. I always chuckle when I visit her. Its funny that im so known in this section 8 complex that when I arrive, I swear I see people scatter.

Also this week a woman whom owes $900 answered her door in a slip. She was not hot.

It was actually a dill week. But....this week I get to hit fayettenam. So Mac better have his bills paid.

When my mom started as a police officer she walked the beat in Crawford Village. Said the people were actually real nice for the most part.

Devil's advocate: How does your company come to take ownership of these debts? Do (or how do) they confirm that the debts are legitimate?

Without giving out to much info, the financial institute I am employed by have people who when they borrow money and default on paying it back are automatically blacklisted. After a few letter that generally get no response they send the claims department (me) out to collect payments via phone, letter, or friendly visits.

Honest question....there are legitimate (many) cases where someone goes into debt due to legitimate hardship that is outside of their control. I know there are plenty of deadbeats out there that make their own bad decisions, but there are also plenty of people that did everything right and life just dealt them a crap hand, whether it is through bad health, death, being laid off, etc.

Do you ever deal with those types of people, and do you feel like an utter piece of crap when you try and push them into giving you money?

Please note that this financial institution is not like Joes Pawn Shop or some BS 1-800 borrow money kinda place. Its a fortune 500 company with many branches around the Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York states.

I know what its like to struggle. Sometimes this job makes my heart ache. I've been reduced to lip quivering, tears in eyes when talking to some people. But in sorry im not going to take much pitty on the family with a 73 inch TV, customized caddy with rims, and leather furniture who can't pay 300 bucks. This job has made me a very cynical jerk sometimes. I am a very nice people person. I actually love people...but I have a huge issue with trust now.

No, and those are the aforementioned deadbeats I mentioned, and I wouldn't take pity on them either.

I've taken pitty on the single mom or dad who have kids and work. But....the emphasis is on work. If you are just mooching and popping kids out for cash. That don't fly with me.

1. I pull out my IPAD or netbook and refer to the paperwork they have signed. I show them there signatures and remind them of there lease agreements. If they can't pay I hand thm a slip of paper and basically tell them ill see you tomorrow. I can usually pester or annoy someone into paying me cash or giving me a post dated check. As far as how the payment is determined, usually my boss will give me a minimum number that looks less scary then the whole lump sum. I can also set them up on a payment plan if they qualify. But all that does is raise your rates and ruin your credit.

2. Im not really into typing out long stories on my android right now. Sorry...

Any kind of incentive for you to get more than the minimum number? I imagine they maybe owe 1000 and you will accept 450 or whatever...anything to push you more towards 1000 instead of just starting by asking them for 450?
