The Evan Gattis story is pretty strange/interesting/cool, but this is pretty awesome.

Video is blocked everywhere on youtube.

Whole ride in to work they were talking about a horrible call on Zobrist. Umpires need to be suspended when they have a call blown that egregiously.

I wish Zobrist would've just cracked him with the bat. Would've been totally justified.

Yeah now that i've seen it, its pretty horrible, its amazing that he kept his cool as much as he did. That should result in a fine and/or a suspension.

That might be a worse call than Jerry Meals calling it safe.

Definitely worse than that, i'd put it there with the Joyce 28 out perfect game. Not even an understandable miss.

On the PITCHf/x axes, this final curveball was located around -1.4 horizontally, and 1.6 vertically. I asked Carruth to go to his database and spit out all pitches between -1.5 and -1.3 horizontally and 1.5 and 1.7 vertically. Selecting only for pitches thrown to left-handed batters, of course. There were nearly 3,000 such pitches taken, and 2% of them were called strikes. There were nearly 300 such curveballs taken, and 0.7% of them — two of them — were called strikes. There were 76 such full-count pitches taken, and 3.9% of them — three of them — were called strikes. This call hadn’t never happened before in the PITCHf/x era, but almost every single time, this pitch has been a ball. Which is the right judgment, because the pitch is not in the zone, and in the zone is where the strikes are, or are supposed to be.

Pretty good take on it overall: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.ph ... -bad-call/

Nothing will happen to the ump for the same reason that nothing happened to Jerry Meals- the victim is the small-market Rays. Oh, if he pulled this crap on Boston ESPN would demand him hung by a tree, but since MLB wants small markets to sit down and shut up nothing will be done.

I forgot about Jim Joyce, but that was because he apologized and felt terrible about it. But screw Jerry Meals.

Definitely a bad call, worthy of a fine. I think the Joyce and Meals calls were much worse. The ball looked a lot further off the plate because of the type of pitch and the way it was caught. If it was a fastball that crossed in the same location I don't think people would be as upset.

I'd think they'd be more upset. At least now he has the excuse that it was breaking towards the plate. Its not like it ever got close.

Of the 3, I'd say the Joyce call was definitely the worst.

To me it looks like a 12-6 curve. No real break to the plate. The only reason I think the fastball would be more palatable is because the catcher would be set up outside and not have his glove moving away from the plate. The catcher made that pitch look worse than it was.

The catcher making it bad hurts his case. The location of the pitch was not close to the strikezone.

During his final trip around the majors, Rivera, who is retiring at the end of this, his 19th season with the Yankees, is taking time to visit with team employees who work behind the scenes. On Wednesday, Rivera met with 25 Indians employees - ushers, ticket salespersons, custodians and others - for 30 minutes before the Yankees played the Indians.

Correction- Hanrahan has set himself on fire. Gave up a HR to cut a 2 run lead in half, then got JJ Hardy for the 2nd out...then gave up a base hit, 2 walks (one to McLouth), a wild pitch to tie the game, and a 3 run HR. Can't say I miss him.
