Your two best puck movers and skaters are out and you sit Despres, the next best one? The Pens basically have one dman, Niskanen, who can make an effective first pass out of the zone. You saw what a hard time the Pens had the other night against the Rangers with this D group getting out of their zone.
I don't get it.
I have been a Despres supporter, but he hasn't played well over the last few games he's played. It seems the only player he plays well with is Letang-whatever the reason. I don't see a huge problem with him sitting when we need our defense to be reliable with Martin and Letang out.
The D the Pens have in there right now simply cannot move the puck or skate it out of trouble, that's what Despres can bring.
And at no point this season has Despres been as bad as Engelland has all year.
Despres was not making good breakout passes, was turning the puck over, was chasing hits, was out of position, couldn't play the PP, and couldn't make any good decisions with the puck for about 5 straight games. When a rookie does those things he sits. The bigger role he was attempting to fill with Letang and Martin out was hurting him not helping him. He should be sitting right now.
