The rarely remembered truth about the 2009 SCF GAME 7 "SAVE"

Postby thepittman on Sun Apr 14, 2013 12:06 pm

If Fleury would have had shutouts in the first four games of the series, there would have been no reason for the game 7 "SAVE" :pop:

With my faith in Penguin lore completely shaken, I sadly turn in my Pens fans membership card. I am going to follow a team who's championships are not built on a foundation of lies

It has come to the point where I may be forced to sell my prized collection of Mario Lemieux toenail clippings :(

They weren't even naturally grown...he was taking Biotin the whole time, illegally enhancing nail and hair growth

It would appear so... but it was just a huge troll feed so it's all for the best.

If Lidstrom's shot is not stopped. Does the puck go in the net, hit the post, or just go wide?

Well, this thread is technically trolling a troll. So I'm not sure where that leaves us.

Kennedy shoots pucks into goalie's chests and he "sucks" - Lidstrom does it and it's a "great save".

You're also forgetting the first goal could have been called icing, and Malkin should have been suspended for Game 3 :pop:

That is true, the Pens had great issues with faceoffs late in that game, that led to the needed heroics by Fleury. Just win that last draw, and there is little to no drama.

*speaking of such, anyone know if the voting for the Smythe was ever published? Curious who finished 2nd in the voting.

I tried finding it with no luck. My guess was either Rosby or Fleury.

The voting for the Smythe has never been released as far as I know. And you know me as someone that would research that big time.

The only time I've really ever seen anything even reference Conn Smythe voting is in the 1992 Finals one of the Pittsburgh papers said that Barrasso finished 2nd to Lemieux in voting, but there was never anything to really back that up numerically. Nor do I know how that information was gathered.

The award has been around for near 50 years, and I can't really even think of another reference to second place (much less total voting) in any other instance...

SST, mikey, thanks. I was curious the way that series played out how close Fleury might have been (if the last two games had any sway in the voting). Doesn't really matter in the end. Just strange, in that the vote totals for the regular season awards are almost always available.

Is it wrong that every time I hear someone from Detroit call Crosby a crybaby that I ask them how the automotive industry is doing up there?

Seems like a proportional response.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they aren't released. It would probably be even more obvious that most of the media doesn't "get it" today maybe, unlike back in the day.

From memory, I believe the voting is conducted at the 2nd intermission in the potential elimination game (something like 12 or 15 writers) and if that turns out to not be the elimination game, the voting is scrapped and the process repeats the next game. So, Fleury's save on Lidstrom would not have factored into the voting, as (un)luck would have it...
