"The Save" on Root Sports

Postby IntangibleBeer on Mon Apr 15, 2013 10:21 am

Last night (Sunday), Root Sports broadcast "The Save" on Sunday Night Classics. It was a cool look back at Game 6 of the Pens vs. Devils 1st round playoff series. The game took place April 13, 1991 in New Jersey. Pens trailed 2-3, needing a win to force game 7. In the first period, backup goalie Frank Pietrangelo robs Petr Stazny from point-blank range on a reflex glove save.

Anybody watch it?

I saw the commercials for it, but honestly thought this had already been done. I guess I was just thinking of all of those 1 minute reminders of it that we get every game. Outside of root pittsburgh range, but want to watch it eventually.

I watched most of it, came to it about 8:30 or so. Was first time their Classics were not blacked out for me.

It was very well done, the interspersing of Tags, Errey, Steigy, Lange, Bourque and Pietrangelo with their memories of it.

And after, they aired the "raw tapes" special of the 1991 summer celebration.

The way that game played out, the Pens benefited from McCreary emphatically negating a New Jersey goal that he thought was directed off a skate, that would have tied it at 4 late in the 2nd. This was before replay, so McCreary's call stood. But sure looked like on the replay that it was skate then stick then in net.

The SAVE happened in the first when it was 2-1 Pens, who would later build it to a 4-1 lead before allowing Jersey back in the game.

Yeah, perhaps he did. But in Game 7, he pitches a shut-out. Penguins close out the series with 4-0 win with Frankie in goal on April 15.

Sorry- I was being sarcastic about him sucking. There was a weird thread earlier and I was referring to it.

I watched it. I missed the save part though. So it was kind of pointless for me to watch it as they just trapped the living hell out of the Devils in the third period.

Look forward to some more boring shutdown hockey when we get some leads in the playoffs.
