Love trying new foods crew

Postby thepittman on Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:03 pm

I find it incredibly weird when people are legitimately afraid to try different foods. I don't understand what horrible thing they will believe will happen to them if the expand their diet. It's a subject where people can get angry if you suggest they try something.

Option 2 in the poll sums it up nicely.... except, I would say that in the vast majority of the "ew, gross!" things for Westerners it's more like billions rather than millions.

When it comes to food, we're the goofy ones. Goat is the most widely eaten animal meat in the world. Crickets make up a significant portion of the protein in the diets of people in southeast Asia. Many cultures feature foods that are, technically, spoiled or fermented.

Lighten up a little, everyone.

Trust me I've tried things that I would never eat again, but for some people that includes things on a normal salad.

I'm not as in to trying new foods as I am new combinations.. ie a burger with some crazy toppings.. Like black olives and salsa. Or a pizza with something crazy on it too.

Balut and natto are at the top of my "been there, done that, no need to repeat" list.

I don't mind trying new things... but I certainly have limits. I will never try Balut, for instance. :scared:

I’ve been meaning to try natto. My list of “been there” foods includes Limburger cheese and Taiwanese stinky tofu. Personally, I get disappointed when I find a food that I can’t eat.

I'm like that too, a couple of weeks ago went to burgatory, got the Jerk Chicken burger, it came with banana ketchup. Now I hate bananas so i ordered it on the side, it was awesome, I'm glad I tried it

My wife is very averse to trying new things. I will try new foods, but within reason. For example, I will probably never try natto. Why? Because I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I will absolutely hate it. Same with balut (I'm ready to vomit after reading the description).

I couldn't even tell you if natto comes from the ground, water, or breathes air before I eat it.

I love trying new things, but as a picky eater growing up, I can understand why some aren't as adventurous. I'm not sure when the switch happened from "if it isn't PB&J or cereal, I ain't eating it..." to my new "I'll try anything twice, just in case the first time was do to poor preparation."

There's no "I'm a picky eater" option. I typically go with what I know my taste buds enjoy.

I've definitely missed out on some things, though.

See here is a key difference, I would never order something on the side. I'm all in, I trust the chef has done his best to make whatever meal enjoyable.

I've eaten balut before and it is actual good tasting, but the texture is hard to get past. I've eaten dog prepared with kimchi in SK, I've eaten mountain goat testicles as part of christmas dinner in Austria, and I've eaten nearly every kind of meat raw that won't kill you.

I go in cycles. I'll try a bunch of new things in a short amount of time, then run into something that is just nasty (balut nasty) and withdrawal from new things and return to Arby's for a few weeks.

One of the local food trucks serves their pork sliders with banana ketchup. Good eats.

It's basically just fermented soy beans. But the texture is.... challenging.
