Great night to be a Pirates/Pens fan.......Really liking the Melancon-Grilli 8th and 9th innings.

I'll admit with things like no hitters I'm a little on the superstitious side. Steve Blass was about to give me an aneureysm starting the 4th inning. He was like a little kid who knows a secret, wont say it, but drops every hint imaginable as to what it is.

Nope. Went 7, threw over 100 pitches. At the time the decision was made to lift him the game was still close, so it isn't a big deal- I think if they were leading 5-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th Hurdle may have given him some more rope. Melancon came on for the 8th, then MATW got the first 2 batters of the 9th before Hurdle just had to bring in Grilli to get the last out of the game.

Why make Grilli work 1/3 of an inning? God the way he handles his pitchers baffles me sometimes.

Yeah that was awkward at best. Only thing I could come up with was Grilli had already gotten completely warmed up and whether he came in or not it basically would've counted as a day he pitched. However if that was the case I'm not sure why he didn't just pitch the whole inning.

Saw some tweets a little bit ago, Hurdle was on someone's radio show (might have been Ken Laird?) and said that Liriano and Morton are coming soon. Liriano's next start is in AA and Morton is only one start behind him in terms of being ready.

Yes, the 30-day rehab period started for Liriano on April 15th, so his rehab ends on May 15th.
Morton starts his tonight (for Class A Bradenton) and his should end on May 18th.

Locke, JSanchez, and JMac need to keep this rotation afloat until mid-May when we should have some additional options. And Cole could potentially join them around June 1.

So Liriano and Morton will be ready just in time for JWalk to hit the DL.

Definitely not increasing my confidence in the starting pitchers.

Still looks to me like: Burnett - Rodriguez - Potential Disaster - Potential Disaster - Definite Disaster

I thought the recovery time for Morton was 18 months, and that he was going to miss this season too?

Will Graves ‏@WillGravesAP 11m
#Pirates update: Francisco Liriano starting in Altoona on Saturday, could be in PGH in about 2 weeks. Morton maybe a week behind.

He doesn't have any options left, so once he's ready he has to be on the major league roster. The Pirates essentially took a $2M flier that he can give them something this season.

I think ground chuck can actually help... he was pitching well prior to the injury. For some reason I have a lot more confidence in him than j walk

The 2011 staff had Pitching God Karstens, who is the greatest pitcher to ever grace this earth. It was automatically superior.
