This. There are quite a few players in the age range of 35 or so, and certainly not all of them will be back. But there's not much depth at forward in the minors, so while it's a no-brainer that Bennett makes the team next season, there isn't much young talent other than him ready to step in.

It may come down to players like Kennedy (2m), Iginla (7m), and Morrow (4.1m) taking a cut in pay, or perhaps even moving Martin (5m) banking on one of the young guys to be ready for more minutes. I think Despres is the real deal, and Bortuzzo definitely can be a 5-6 guy.

Do some variables.

Say Salary Cap ($salaryCap) = $65 million

Say Status ($status) = "Pens lost in the first round after being swept by the Islanders, Dan Bylsma was fired, and Tony Granato has taken his place"

Well...he could but we would lose his rights by July 1st if he didn't receive 100% of his current offer. Just like last year, where he was briefly a UFA IIRC...he can sign for league minimum if he wants to, but for the purposes of this very premature thread, yeah, we'd lose our right to first refusal with him if we don't tender a qualifying offer. I don't mean this as a nitpick (I hope it's not viewed that way) because Kennedy is already disliked and if people think that he's a lock to make $2 million+, the thought of it would enrage the masses. Fact of the matter is, if either side wants to work something out, they very much can.

But based on this board, Kennedy could write each and every one of us a check after every game that he plays for Pittsburgh and people would still dislike him...so whatever...

This is easily one of the best seasons for the 'GM' thread and what makes it so interesting is the fact everyone will be talking about who to keep, not about the FAs that could be brought in - a really unique potentially one-off situation. Crazy. As others have said we need to see what happens in the playoffs as you never know who might step up and who might fail to meet expectations, all of which will be tempered by and measured against the team's post season success. The fact Iggy is selling his Calgary home suggests he may well remain a Pen. Personally (at this point in time) I'd prioritise Dupuis and Murray then see what's left in the bank. I look forward to revisiting this thread!

When does Malkin's contract end, next year? That could be a lot of savings right there...

I don't understand the constant hate piled on Malkin. It belongs in the irrational thread in NHR.

Is it because we expect crosby/malkin to play out like lemiux/jagr so we better just dump him now.

I know it's a vocal minority, but luckily the only way Pens let Malkin go is if he doesn't want to be in Pittsburgh.

I hope that, no matter how we do this year, RS and DB finally start letting our youth get steady time next year so with that in mind, I'm thinking you let the rentals go with the exception of Murray and Jussi. I don't think Morrow has a full season left in his body and Iginla is a luxury on a team fill of them.

We all know that Duper simply has to be here but the question is the team's loyalty to the role players which historically has been strong. If I'm the GM, I'm dumping most of them and starting to build off of a new younger core. I don't want to see Red Wings II happen here.

Gotta trade Martin or Nisky, preferably Martin. I know, he's good and we could use him and his talents. Nisky is younger. Dupres will be fine for Martin in the long run.

Sign Morrow for a slight discount maybe 3.5.

Sign Dupuis for a raise, maybe 2.0-2.5

Keep Murray for 2.5

This would make us very close to the cap.

I would love to keep Iggy but Martin would have to go and he would have to take a pay cut. Maybe a 5 for 5 deal, peddle Martin for some draft picks and sign Iggy for 5.

Like to keep Bortuzzo, if he's cheap and we sign Iggy.

Bye-bye

Cooke
Adams
Eaton

Every time I see someone type "Dupres", I read it as Dupuis. Then the sentence doesn't make sense and have to go back and figure it out.

Yup, my first order of business would be to re-hire Shero and re-assign myself as Assistant GM...I need the experience.

That would be stupid. I'd just make Shero the Assistant, let him hire his own assistant and I'd just collect that NHLGM pay.

the priority is getting geno and letang resigned for long term deals. everything else we do is either making space, or filling holes to accommodate those deals.

i think we probably let kennedy test the waters. someone will either match his 2mil or give him more based on the fact that he scored 20g one year and has a ton of post season experience. if there's no interest, or he decides he wants to waive his UFA status and sign for less (which no way in hell would ANY pro athlete actually do that), he's back for less. only way that happens.

adams will be gone. eaton will be gone. vitale will be a permanent 4th liner. i'd be surprised to see cooke back, although i think we could easilly make a deal if we wanted to.
