What to do about a rabbit problem?

Postby knives of ice on Mon May 06, 2013 7:20 pm

yeah, so i guess i have a rabbit problem at my house. i live in a residential development and my backyard is fenced in with a 6' high wooden fence. near the back of the yard is a wooden shed to store things in, etc.
it seems that a family of rabbits have decided to make their den under my shed and my backyard has become a rabbit sanctuary. there are always 2-3 rabbits in the backyard.

the problem comes when we let our two small dogs outside - its a madhouse chasing these rabbits all around
the yard. i personally don't care much but my wife is so worried about the dogs killing the rabits or the dogs chasing them getting through the fence, etc. i'd be fine with getting rid of them through force but that isn't going to fly.

does anyone have any idea how i can get rid of these bastards? my wife is ordering repellent to get rid of them, but i see little/no chance of that working.

Problem? Seems like an epicurean opportunity.

You can rent or buy traps that will catch them alive. Just need to bait them. I'm not sure where to get the traps or what to use as bait but i'm sure Google knows.

You can buy the traps at stores like home depot. Can be a bit pricey, but a small one for rabbits should not be bad. Might be a good idea to get one if this may be a recurring problem...unless you fix the shed area to prevent them. The traps are called "haveahart."

You can borrow my dog. You'll have a blood bath in your yard, but no rabbits will survive.

Doesn't work, stinks to high heaven, and surely wouldn't do a thing for rabbits already established within fenced in yard... My wife tried it time and again to protect her flowers from rabbits, and it did not make a bit of difference. Did I mention it really stinks?

When the ingredients are eggs mixed with garlic, it will stink. The smell is supposed to drive them away. It worked for my cousin.

Nothing a 22LR or BB gun can't handle. I'll even let you try some of it after I bread and deep fry them.

:thumb: to the 22LR. If firearms can't be used, the minimum I think I'd use would be a break-barrel pellet rifle. I'm sure it can be done, but I think a BB would be a little under powered to cleanly drop a rabbit.

Between Beerman, FC44, and Columbias posts, this thread gave me a pretty good chuckle. Thanks.
